Mijita, her 5 little brothers, and her parents lived in a tiny house and they only had two bedrooms. One day, Mijita was tired of sharing a room with her brothers, so she strongly wanted to have her own space, though she liked her brothers. It was very crowded for 8 of them in a tiny house and sometimes Mijita's friends and relatives came from Mexico stayed with them.Sometimes in the morning, Mijita climbed on a tree to think, for she didn’t have her own space at home. There was a storage closet beside the living room separated by flour-sack curtains.Mijita told mom her idea, but mom told Mijita that they had to put items in the storage room. When she saw tears in Mijita’s eyes, she decided that they could put the items on the back porch and cover them with old blankets so that Mijita could have her own space in the storage closet. After breakfast, everyone carried the items from the storage room to the back porch except the paint cans for painting the room. Then, they mixed the colors together to make magenta, and painted it on the storage closet’s walls. Mom measured Mijita’s new room with a yellow string of yarn, and they did the same thing to their friend’s bed who was going to Mexico. The size of the bed was perfect for Mijita’s room, so their friend arrived at Mijita’s house with the bed tied to his car’s roof. The brothers helped Mijita’s carry the storage room. They placed an empty wooden crate to be Mijita’s bedside table. Then, they used Blue Chips stamps their mom had been collecting for years to buy a new lamp for Mijita’s room.It was a beautiful ballerina, made of white ceramic glass with ruffles around the top and bottom. The next day, Mijita went to the library and rushed home with 6 books. She read a book to her 2 youngest brothers at night. Before Mijita could turn off the lights, she fell asleep in her own room.
The first thing I learned from this story is that money can’t do everything, your brain is more important than being rich, because the brain could help you solve a lot of problems. In the story, Mijita and her family were very smart, because they used the crate as a bedside table, mixed the paint colors, and used the yellow yarn to measure the bed.
Second, I learn from this story is that we have to work together as a team and also help each other. For example, Mijita’s friend helped them by giving Mijita a bed, because they let him stay in their house until he rented his own home. Besides, the 5 little brothers worked as a team when they carried items on the back porch, painted the walls, and put other items in the storage closet.
Lastly, I learned that having no money and sadness are 2 completely different things. If you don’t have enough money to live, it doesn’t mean that you have to be unhappy, upset, or sad. In this story, Mijita’s family didn’t have money, but Mijita was not unhappy, because she loved her family and they made her little wish come true.
