Literature Comparison: The Thirty-Nine Steps vs Gulliver’s Travels

The Thirty-Nine Steps, written by the author John Buchan, is the first man-on-the-run book that was ever written. It talks about how a person named Hannay This book starts off with talking about the boredom of life. One day a neighbor comes into his house claiming to fear for his life. This man later reveals his name is Franklin P. Scudder., a freelance spy. One day, Hannay finds Scudder lying dead in his house. Hannay chose to run away because the police would think that he was the murderer of Scudder. The Gulliver's Travels is an adventure book written by Jonathan Swift. This book starts off when Gulliver’s boat crashes into the kingdom of Lilliput. He starts his adventure, as his curiosity brings him into the unknown world of fantasy. These two books are all well written. One that I think that particularly stands out to me more is the Thirty-Nine Steps.

There are always unique similarities in books that may seem completely different. Even though Hannay and Gulliver do things that others may not imagine themselves doing, these two main characters are still normal and Englishmen with a good life at the start. After Hanay met Scudder and When Gulliver had a shipwreck, their lives completely changed. To go through these experiences that Gulliver and Hannay are going through, there are some personalities that they have to have in common. The traits that help these two characters are smartness, bravery, curiosity, and calmness. These personalities were used as advantages to the main character for their success. There are many characters in this book, but some are evil and some are good. We are at the main character’s point of view and when someone does something bad to the main character, we think he is a bad character and if not then readers may assume that the character is good. There is always a similarity between things, even if they seem totally different.

Books stand out when they are unique and different from others that are written. These two books have a lot of differences that they have that stand out a lot. The setting that the characters were in had a great effect on the characters. In the Thirty-Nine Steps Hannay goes to Scoland. He is patriotic and puts the country’s safety before his own life. In the book Gulliver’s Travels, Gulliver goes to a fictional world, which he doesn’t know anything about. This leads him to become more adventurous and curious about the new world he has found. There are also many advantages and disadvantages the two main characters have in their adventures. Hannay has many skills to help himself but is on his own. Gulliver, on the other hand, has others that help him on his way, but he is constantly in an unknown world. Both of the character’s reasons they started the adventure are also quite different. Hannay wanted to save his country. Gulliver was simply curious, but he also does not like the problems that the humans have. Differences are important in the world, and these two books have many differences.

Thirty-Nine Steps and Gulliver’s Travels are both action-packed and adventurous stories, but one that stands out to me the most is the Thirty-Nine Steps. Hannay uses a lot of skills to find a way to escape from the police. There are many skills used in the book that I find interesting. For example, he used the knowledge of making bombs to bomb the jail. Many times, he disguises himself as other people, not only does he wear the same clothes but he also copies the accent of the person that he is disguised as. He even convinced his enemy, Marmaduke, to give Hannay his clothes and car. Also, he takes many important risks on the way. These risks that he makes, makes the book more intense and some are creative. I also find it interesting that even though Hannay is going through a lot of hardship while getting chased, he still persists to try to keep the country safe. In the book Thirty-Nine Steps there are a lot of comedic, creative, and intense parts.

The Thirty-Nine Steps and Gulliver’s Travels are extraordinary books and written perfectly. These two books have a lot of similarities and differences. The two main characters in the books are all regular human beings. The characteristics that the characters needed for their journeys are very similar. The differences that the characters have help them survive in their situation in the adventures. The purpose that started the adventure and made the story keep going for the Thirty-Nine Steps was that he wanted to keep his country safe. Gulliver’s ship crashed, which led him to Lilliput. Starting from Lilliput, Gulliver starts his curious adventure. Out of these two books, I think that I prefer the Thirty-Nine Steps over Gulliver's Travels. The Thirty-Nine Steps has many creative and intense moments, making it a very interesting book for readers to read.
