Literature Comparison and Contrast: Hannay vs Gulliver

Gulliver’s Travels, written by Jonathan Swift, talks about a man named Gulliver, the only survivor of a sea storm. He was floated up to a place called Lilliput. He went to different countries during his journey. He went back to his hometown, England, in the end. The Thirty-Nine Steps, written by John Buchan talks about a man called Hannay. Hannay was escaping from the police and spies. The police and the spies wanted him because he was from that country. They chased him because of many reasons. He thought of many ways to escape from the police and spies. He disguised himself as a milkman. He also thought of other unique and intelligent ways to escape. He can always think of an idea quickly. Hannay and Gulliver are identical in some ways and also different in some ways. These two books are all known as adventurous books.

Gulliver and Hannay were similar in the book. Gulliver and Hannay were all Englishmen from England. They came from the same country.  They all looked in the usual way. They didn’t look special at that time. Gulliver and Hannay, during their exciting adventures, were all brave, intelligent, and also full of adventure. They are both eager to meet more adventures during their journey. They both faced danger during their trip. Gulliver had to meet new creatures and cultures while traveling to different, unique countries while Hannay faced danger. But actually, they mean the same. They all have to face new things during their adventure. In both books, some adventures show their personalities. For example, Gulliver’s journey to Lilliput showed that he wasn’t afraid of the royal court at that place. Hannay’s journey when he disguised himself as a milkman showed that he was smart enough to think of disguising himself into a person that others may not notice. From these evidences, the readers can see that their similarities from all kinds.

Gulliver and Hannay were different from some ways. Gulliver’s Travels’s time is in 1699-1715. Gulliver’s Travels’ happens during that time. But, Hannay’s adventure happens in 1914. The two times have a very big difference. Gulliver’s Travels happens in many different countries, while Hannay’s adventure just happens in England and Scotland.Gulliver is a very adventurous person that is eager to see the world in different ways. He liked to see different countries all over the world. He wasn’t afraid of anything when he got to another country. But, Hannay only had quick thinking during his adventures. Hannay got quick thinking, and then he could think of the great ideas and solutions to let him escape.Gulliver always had others supporting him in that country. But, Hannay also have the advantage that he don’t need to think of others while he is escaping. Gulliver always had someone that tried to let Gulliver go away. But, Hannay was also always on his one. Nobody can support Hannay during his escape.

I personally like Gulliver better. Gulliver’s personality is full of excitement and adventure. He loved adventure. So he went to different countries to find ways to go back home. He also tried to find others to support him back home. He didn’t think of going back to home by his own. He tried to find people and other creatures telling him the way to go back to England. I also appreciate Hannay, but I think that Hannay was always on his own. He is like a lonely wolf. He does things always on his own and never eager to find others to help him to finish his escape plan. He was also able to escape on his own, but I think that if he find a partner, he may finish the plans quicker than he thinks. Gulliver had never think to do things all by his own. This made him able to go back to his hometown-England by boat at Japan at last.

Gulliver’s Travels and The Thirty-Nine Steps are two books that contains exciting adventures. Gulliver from Gulliver’s Travels is my favourite person between him and Hannay from The Thirsty-Nine Steps. Gulliver himself makes people a feeling that he is full of energy when he is ready to go for an adventure.Gulliver’s Travels and The Thirty-Nine Steps are both two books that I both recommend to every person that likes to read adventure stories.
