Literature Comparison and Contrast: Hannay vs Gulliver

The Thirty-Nine Steps is an adventure spy novel by John Buchan written in 1914. Told from the first-person point of view, it relates the adventure of "ordinary fellow" Richard Hannay, who is thrust into a plot involving the theft of crucial military intelligence by German anarchists. Richard Hannay is the main character in the novel of The Thirty-Nine Steps, who was trying to save his own life and his country. Gulliver Travels is a satirical novel by Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift. The book follows the voyages of Lemuel Gulliver as he ventures to uncharted regions of the world where he finds new civilizations and encounters fantastical beings. Lemuel Gulliver is the main character in the novel of Gulliver Travels, who likes to voyage to other areas. Both books are all really good to read and learn from, and there are many lessons that we can learn from the book, like the personality and the way the characters do and act. For me to choose which one is better or I like to read more is Gulliver from the Gulliver Travels. See my reasons above!

Even though they are two different novels, there are still pretty much similarities between them. Richard Hannay and Lemuel Gulliver both have similar appearances, they are both normal Englishmen with good lives. They all have normal appearance, nothing special. Their personalities are also very alike, they are both brave, smart, adventurous, curious. Those personalities are very important for having a big and dangerous adventure, so they are really wonderful at this. They both have enough things to start an adventure, like the personality they have, and prepare what they are going to use and what the attitude to have an adventure. Also, other minor characters or the surroundings gave them influence as well. For Gulliver, the minor character is like Glumdalclitch, who is Gulliver's kindly 9-year-old nurse. She carries him about Brobdingnag in a box meant for his protection, sews his clothes, and generally treats him like a pet. A lot of the humor in the Brobdingnag chapters comes from Gulliver's happy return to a kind of babyhood. For Hannay, the surroundings influence him during the story. The surroundings make him want to save him and the country more, and have much more determination to do it. The thesis of both is that both stories have adventure to show the main characters' personalities, virtues, and advantages.

On the other hand, the two novels must have their differences, because they are two different novels. The setting is different. The Thirty-Nine Steps happen in England when the time is 1914. Gulliver Travels happened in Balnibarbi, the island of Glubbdubdrib, Luggnagg, and Japan from 1699-1715. Their personalities are similar, but they also have different personalities. Like Hannay is quick thinking, uptight, confused. Gulliver is a good observer, intelligent and well-educated, but also naïve and gullible. The advantages and disadvantages are also different from them. The advantage for Hannay is patriotism, and good at disguise. The disadvantage for Hannay is has to fight alone, not many people supporting or trusting, he is always wanted, pursued, cannot do anything freely, and always facing danger. The advantage of Gulliver is the spirit of exploration, and gets support and help from the surroundings. The disadvantage of Gulliver is an unknown environment with different creatures, and always facing hostility because of different species and cultures. The problems and solutions are also very different from each other. The Thirty-Nine Steps problem is he is bored with life, and soon finds himself framed for murder and involved in a complex assassination plot. Which means that an innocent man is mistakenly accused of a crime and must clear his name. The solution is Hannay and the police capture the enemy agents, preventing them from delivering crucial military secrets, and he saves his own life plus save the country. The Gulliver Travels' problems are being captured by the tiny Lilliputians and navigating their complex political landscape, but he actually faces a lot of problems, especially in Lilliput. The solution is to cooperate with the Lilliputians because that is the only solution for him. The purpose of having an adventure is also different for them. Hannay's purpose is to save his own life and to save the country, also he is clearing his name from the bad things. Gulliver’s purpose is curious at the world and not satisfied at his present situation. The themes reflected are also different from each other, like the explorations and misanthropes.

Both novels are really great to read and learn from, but for me I like Gulliver Travel better than The Thirty-Nine Steps. The reason is that I think Gulliver Travels is more interesting to read. There are also big reasons that I like reading this more because I like fairy tales or fiction, so Gulliver Travels is the type that I like to read. For The Thirty-Nine Steps is a little bit scary to read and a little harder to understand than Gulliver Travels. In the novel of Gulliver Travels, there are many interesting parts that I like to read, especially in the Lilliput. Even though there are many problems that Gulliver needs to face, I think it is a very challenging problem and interesting to read. The Thirty-Nine Steps is kind of an uncover story, and it will have many fight and kill parts, but the thing is that I feel scared and do not really like it. I like the main character in Gulliver Travels, which is Lemuel Gulliver. I think when he feels not satisfied with his present situation, he is trying to find the life that he wants, and I think that is a good start for adventure or a very good habit for him. His adventure is very interesting and lets us learn many things just from his adventure. Gulliver Travels let me learn that physical power versus moral righteousness, and Lemuel Gulliver has all done that in his adventure. I just want to say that both books are very great and each teaches me different things that I will use in the future world, but just only my opinion, like Gulliver Travels better.

In conclusion, I like Gulliver better than Hannay, because I think Gulliver is more interesting and I have learned many habits or lessons from this character and the book. I like the novel Gulliver Travels and the main character of this novel. When I read this novel, I always feel like I went through another world, like Neverland. Maybe I am still not growing up yet, but I really like fairy tales or fiction, and Gulliver Travels is the type that I like to read. I have also learned many things from Gulliver, this character, like physical power versus moral righteousness, individualism versus communal society, and deception versus honesty. This is a simple and interesting novel to read, I only need to think of reading, which doesn’t need to think of the plot and what does this mean. Sometimes I really want to try an adventure as the Gulliver Travels, I think it is really fun and I hope that I can meet the same that Gulliver has met during his adventure. Reading the Gulliver Travels makes me want to read again and again, or like not stopping to read it. I hope more people will read this novel, because this is a really interesting novel. I just want to say that I really like Gulliver and Gulliver Travels!
