Let's Talk about Moon

There are many phases of the moon, in total, and there are eight phases. The moon of the phase means the way it looks in the night sky as it orbits the earth, day and night. It may seem different each day, but it’s the same moon, circling the Earth every day and night. The moon may look bright in the night sky, but it actually doesn’t have any light, the glow of the sun bounces off the moon and hits the Earth. That’s what makes the brightless moon look so bright. It took the moon one month to circle the earth, so some people call “month,” “moon.”

The moon appears to be different in size because the moon is orbiting the Earth, so it has a day side and a night side, and it’s always half-lit and half-shadowed. When we see a little bit of the light from the moon, we can just a little bit of the bright side, the rest of the shadow is facing us. When we see the full moon, the shadows aren’t facing us. Instead, all the bright light is facing us. Sometimes, we can only see a part of the moon, but it’s there, it’s only because it’s in shadow. Sometimes, we can’t see the moon at all! Because the shadow is facing right towards us.

There are eight phases of the moon. The first one is the new moon, which can’t be seen, but it’s there. About three days later, the moon keeps rotating. It’s now the waxing Crescent Moon. The word waxing means growing. And after about three to four days, the moon becomes half full, called the First Quarter Moon. After the First Quarter, there comes waxing gibbous, where the moon is almost full. The next is almost the most beautiful one; it’s called the full moon, where the moon shines the brightest and the biggest. When it grows and becomes a whole, it begins shrinking again. A few days later, it shrinks into the Waning Gibbous. Waning means shrinking or decreasing. Then came the Last Quarter. The moon is once again half-lit. And then Waning Cresent. Now, the moon is almost gone but there is still light. And last of all comes the new moon again. And again, we can’t see it.

My favorite phase of the moon is the Waxing crescent phase. I have many reasons for thinking that way. First, it’s small and dainty, like a cute, little sleeping baby. When I watch it, I always think that I heard a baby lullaby.Second, the moon looks like a beautiful blade cutting the sky and stars with its glowing bright light. Last but not least, it’s the start of a new lunar cycle. The Waxing Crescent moon is a sign that the cycle is starting over again. So, the Waxing crescent phase is my favorite phase. It’s very comforting to see.

In conclusion, there are eight phases of the moon. It rotates the earth. The moon is always half in sunlight and half in darkness. Each of the phases changes every couple of days. The moon itself doesn’t really have light to shine on the Earth, that moon actually reflects the light of the sun. Usually, the part of the moon facing the Earth is never all lit or all dark. My favorite phase is the Waxing crescent phase. Its long, curved, beautiful blade reminds me of freshly cut grass. The familiar glow reminds me of all the songs Papa and Mama sang to me when I was small.
