Let’s Talk About Mistakes

We are humans, and we all make mistakes each and every day of our lives. The fact that we do so distinguishes us as humans, because everyone makes mistakes at some time and at some point of their lives. That is why mistakes are very normal and are extremely frequent in our everyday lives. Over time we just get used to these mistakes that we will be making. Establishing the fact that we make mistakes, and that we make a lot of mistakes, we can find that it is how people deal with it that makes the biggest difference. This difference leads to another question, what exactly is the impact does how people deal with their mistake have on their school days as well as their lives? The way people react to their mistakes split them mainly into two groups of people, people who try to fix their mistakes, as well as people who try to hide and run away from their mistakes.

Some people will think that mistakes are only the tests that will see if they have the courage to become successful. These people are the ones who truly think that they can get better and fix their mistakes through lots of attempts as well as through hard work in general. They can effectively bounce back after their mistakes, and catch them before they become a problem again. Researchers have conducted a test on kids to play a game, and the result was that the kids who think like this had a lot of parts of their brain that was reacting to the mistake, and reflecting upon it. Each reaction and response lasted up to five hundred milliseconds. When we can face our mistakes and are ready to learn from these mistakes, we can get better over time, no matter how long that period of time is, helping us learn more from the mistakes that we had made. Therefore, people who think like this will have the courage to confront their mistakes and reflect on them, in order to truly solve their problem.

On the other hand, others will believe that they were born with a certain level of intelligence that cannot be changed into anything better whatsoever. Those who think like this would like to ignore their mistakes rather than face them properly. These people would much rather run away from the mistakes that they had made and generally just hope that it will not happen again even though they know it will. Researchers have conducted a test on kids to play a game, and the result was that the kids with a fixed mindset had only small regions of their brain that was reacting to the mistake, and reflecting upon it. Each reaction and response lasted only around one hundred fifty milliseconds. If we try to run away from our mistakes and try to ignore them, and hope they will not happen again, because they most definitely will, we will never improve and make progress to becoming more intelligent. As you can see, the people who think like this will try to hide from their mistakes and run away hoping the mistake wouldn't come back again.

These two different types of thinking split people into two different groups, people with a growth mindset, as well as others with a fixed mindset. Even though some may think that a fixed mindset may be better, but mostly, a growth mindset could be truly the best in terms of helpfulness and benefit to our lives. A fixed mindset may be better for a shorter term, to make ourselves feel better, but is very bad for the long term, because the same mistakes will trip us over and over again, with new mistakes added on. But when we think of mindsets in another perspective, even though growth mindsets force us to reflect on our mistakes, and that can be a painful experience, the reward is to have truly solved the mistakes we have found on ourselves. From this idea we can find that a fixed mindset is going to make us feel better for only a short amount of time, but a growth mindset will help us clear out the mistakes we have and be successful in the long term. So which is better? Growth mindset or fixed mindset? Considering which mindset is better overall requires thinking about our lives. Our lives are not short term, they are extremely long term. This means that if we want to be successful for the longer term, then a growth mindset is the way to go. Thus, growth mindsets are, in most cases, much more beneficial to us than a fixed mindset.

Mistakes are unavoidable, and they are so common to us they have become a simple fact of life. They happen so frequently in our lives that we have to find a way to deal with them. This separates people into two groups in general, based on how they deal with their mistakes. The growth mindset group, which are the people who look back and reflect upon their mistakes, and the fixed mindset group, which are the people who attempt to ignore their mistakes. Comparing these two mindsets, the growth mindset group is much better and more helpful for us for the longer term, for our lives, rather than the fixed mindset, which will only make us feel good for a short amount of time. And that is still before the same problem comes along again. But people with more of a fixed mindset can still change. It doesn't mean that they cannot change anything and they just have to stay that way. They can change into a growth mindset if they want to, and if they have the courage and determination to.
