Let’s Talk About Graphs

There are many tools we could use to explain something we had come up with in our brain or our Hypothesis/guess. One way to explain or show our data is by using or drawing a Graph. A graph is something like a diagram that represents data or values in an organized manner. The reason why we use graphs is because they show numbers, reports, and science research more clearly so that we could analyze them and understand.

There are many types of graphs for certain usages. For example, there are Bar charts, Line graphs, Area graphs, Scatter plots, Venn diagrams, Pie charts, Pictographs, Column charts, and Bubble charts, Gauge charts, and Stacked Venns etc. They all have different usages, looks, and style. For example, a Pictograph is a graph used to display information that uses images or symbols to represent data and numbers. Usually, we see it in math worksheets for students in grade one - two.

There are so many Graphs in the world! So, what are their best usages? Line graphs are used to track changes over short and long periods of time. When smaller changes exist, line graphs are better to use than bar graphs. Pie charts are often used to represent sample data—with data points belonging to a combination of different categories. And a bubble chart is primarily used to depict and show relationships between numeric variables. There are tons of other graphs with other usage for learning too.

My favorite graph is the Pictograph because it brings up old childhood memories of me sitting in my second-grade classroom doing math worksheets before recess. I could feel the smooth paper beside me. I could hear the laughter of the first graders playing outside. I could see the pictograph in front of me while I was concentrating on my “Exit Ticket”. It makes me happy and joyful when I see a Pictograph. It might even remind me of when I have grown up.

There are so many usages to every graph. But when one kind of graph is best for one usage, it does not mean other graphs are useless. When we say something is good, we don’t say other things are bad. Because, everything has their own way of showing their own uniqueness. Everyone has their own benefits that they could teach or share with other people with negative benefits.
