Let’s Talk About Graphs

Graphs help display data visually. They are used for crunching up numbers, instead of displaying them in a long list and showing lots of complicated details, graphs provide a quick picture of the data, which can save us a lot of time. Also, it can make studies more effective by displaying the data clearly, and can also be used to make comparisons visually, instead of taking numbers from a list and then comparing them in your head, graphs provide a quick and clear way to display data.

Graphs can be presented in different formats, and each format suits different requirements or preferences. The bar chart, which can be presented in the form of a line, area or column chart, organizes data presented by bars of different lengths, it provides a straightforward comparison by comparing the lengths or heights of the bars of different variables and shows a clear change in variables. A pie chart organizes data as parts of a circle and the data is organized as percentages and all the data adds up to 100 percent. It not only allows for easy comparison by comparing the area but also shows a full picture of the full set of data. A scatter chart uses dots to organize data and the position of each dot determines the data. Scatter charts almost always have very complicated information and a simple scatter chart’s dots can be connected to make a line chart. A Geo chart is a map that shows the pattern of a specific area or the whole world. There are so many different charts, but all in all, they provide a visual presentation that can help people’s understanding.

Different formats of charts are not only for self-preference but also have there most suitable field of usage, which connects to their attributes. Bar charts are best used for representing changes over time and the relationship between two variables. They are represented in an x-y plot and make the comparison straightforward. For example, the popularity of a movie over different age groups could be represented by a bar chart. Pie charts are used for comparison with the whole set of data. The distribution of a household’s money spent over different areas including food, housing, transportation, and miscellaneous can be presented in a pie chart for an immediate concept. Finally, a scatter chart is best used for exact and complex sets of data. It can be used to compare the results of different sets of test results.

My favorite type of graph is the line chart which is a kind of bar chart because it makes comparisons of complicated information easier and in a neat way. It links different sets of data in a path and each set of unlimited data consisting of very complicated data. Every time we read a line chart, we can be amused at the simplicity of the graph, although it shows a very complicated set of data. It is usually used in the stock market which needs to show a tremendous and continuous change that seems to last forever.

In conclusion, graphs come in many shapes and sizes, all of which have different uses and characteristics. Bar charts are used for change over time, pie charts are used for comparison of parts of a whole, scatter charts are used for very complicated and continuous data, and my favorite chart is the scatter chart as it can consist of so much data and we can study for a long time. Graphs are especially important in the days before computers appeared, and today with the aid of computers, graphs can be even more complicated and easy to create.
