Let’s Talk about Education

Schools are institutions either funded by the government (public schools) or by private companies (private schools) that create a learning environment for students. Their goal is mostly to provide education for students. Most countries have a formal system of education where students go through a series of schools. Where, in China, our government provides three years of kindergarten, six years of elementary schools, and three years of junior high school. This system requires families to pay only small amounts of money and most of the education students receive is free. Some even say this is the best education system in the world before college!

There are mainly two types of schools: public schools and private schools. The main difference between them is the difference in the source of support. Public schools depend primarily on government funds, while private schools are usually supported by tuition payments and sometimes by other nonpublic sources such as religious organizations, endowments, grants, and charities. Furthermore, public schools have less requirements for students, so students would differ from social class to social status. In contrast, Private schools may only consist of a certain social class, and religious students.

Homeschooling is a new type of education that basically means the education of school-aged children at home or a variety of places other than a school. Such education is mostly conducted by a parent, tutor, or an online teacher. In my opinion, homeschooling is quite beneficial for students since they often result in higher grades. According to ThinkImpact, “Homeschooled students perform much better than their counterparts in formal institutional schooling. Peer-reviewed studies indicate that 69% of homeschooled students succeed in college and adulthood. Homeschooled students tend to perform above average on their ACTs and SATs.” Besides, “research has shown that being homeschooled does not impact a child's social, emotional and psychological development, or their achievement levels – in fact, they often achieve more.” (Sword 2020)

I , personally, would prefer private schools since there is a higher chance of success in private schools. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has published reports in the past that show greater academic success among children in private schools compared to public schools. Of course, attitude, hard work, character, and social skills are important factors when it comes to success, but those who attend a private school gain a big advantage over those who attend public schools. Moreover, private schools offer students a much safer and stable learning environment. As a result, students would mostly have a better chance of success.

Nelson Mandela once said, “education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” Studies have shown that economic growth is a direct causation of education increase. This relationship is evident on a large scale. According to an XQ report on the future of work, increasing student achievement will add $70 trillion to the GDP over time. Education lessens the possibility of obstacles in life. According to Jasmeane (2015), “I believe education is the most important tool you can receive, that can bring you most success in society today. Education lessens the challenges you will face in life. The more knowledge you gain the more opportunities will open up to allow individuals to achieve better possibilities in career and personal growth.” Therefore, a good education means good life.
