A Sweet Invention by Tracy Vonder Brink talks about how Ruth invented the chocolate chip cookie. In the 1930s, Ruth owned the Toll House restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts. At the time, chocolate was used in desserts but always melted and mixed in, so she sprinkled the chocolate on the cookie. The cookies were a hit and were put on store shelves, making them more popular because more people now had access to the chocolate chip cookies.

Before I read this passage, I used to think that the chocolate chip cookie was invented because somebody spilled a can of crushed chocolate on some cookies. I thought that was how the cookie was invented because the chocolate looks like it has been thrown on the cookie after it’s been smashed to bits so I thought it was made like that. The text said that the chocolate was put on the cookie after an ice pick crushed it so my guess is close to the answer.
