Knowing Yourself

The theme of self knowledge shows in many different stories and this is a very important process that everyone goes through. In the pigman and me, Geraldine Moore the poet, and just once it tells us about different people who experience change. In the pigman and me, Paul is new to his school and one day he gets in a fight but acts smartly to avoid getting beat up more then he needs to. In Geraldine Moore the poet, Geraldine is poor and her life is terrible but when she talks about her feelings out loud, the teacher found she has poetic talent and makes her feel life still has hope. In just once, Bryan is a star football player but he always wants to carry the ball although he plays defense. When Bryan has the chance he is under pressure by the sheer amount of opponents but he still gets a touchdown and wins the game. Bryan then says never again because he realizes that he belongs in defense. All of these stories teach us about self knowledge and decision making.

Although the characters have various personalities and different backgrounds, they all find the courage at certain moments to try to better understand themselves. dPaul is a new student at school so when he is asked for the paddle, he thinks he is being taken advantage of and this leads to a fight. Paul finds a way to act smartly and he protects himself from further damage. Bryan is a great football player who wants his teammates' fame when he passes to them and they get a touchdown. This causes Bryan to act out of line and ask for the ball which ultimately teaches him that he is not fit to carry the ball although he got a touchdown when he did. Geraldine is a poor girl and she struggles in life. No one understands her problems but finally, her English teacher recognizes her talent and compliments her. While the paths may be unique, with different backgrounds and various personalities, the characters are all on the journey of self-discovery that helps them to get a deeper understanding of themselves.

People may seem different from their true self .That is because we view them from the outside but not evolving in their personal life or  internal growth. Paul’s peers thought he wasn’t smart but shy instead and he surprised them when he fought John. No one thought Geraldine would have any talent or even finish her homework , the teacher understood her and complimented her when everyone else thought she wasn’t special. Bryan was thought of as an obedient but aggressive young boy on the field but he asked for the ball which was surprising for a person playing defense. After he touched down, all others thought he would continue but he immediately gave up. All these characters surprised the people who thought they knew them well. They showed their true abilities or thoughts during their special moment. Truly knowing who you are comes from always exploring what you can be, not from limiting yourself to what others expect.

It takes time for you to understand yourself in moments of change. Everyone's process of change is different and goes at their own pace. Brian had to go through the experience of carrying the ball because he wanted the fame but then he realized that he is not fit to do that but instead to play defense and support the team.  Geraldine never thought she could write poetry or that no one understands her because of the distractions in her outside life so when her teacher pointed out her great work of poetry she changed her thinking. All three kids realized their strengths, weaknesses, or potential during a special point in their  lives and this caused them to better understand themselves which had a positive change on themselves and the people around them. Knowing yourself is a process which needs time and  helps you deepen your knowledge of yourself.

The pigman and me, Geraldine Moore the poet, and just once are great stories that teach us self knowledge, personalities, and change. When you're trying to understand yourself it will take time until you succeed and realize who you actually are. In just once, the moose thought he should be the one to carry the ball but when he actually did, he realized that he himself was not fit for this. If you think you know someone because you take the time to study who they are, you will only know about their outside life but not their personal life. Everyone is trying to understand themselves and this change takes time but you will find the courage at certain moments to achieve this change. In Geraldine Moore the poet, Geraldine had the courage in English class to complain about her life and she realized that she was very talented in poetry. All the characters show that growing is an ongoing process and you need to act courageously in tough situations so you can truly learn who you are and what you want.
