Is Medical Science Advanced Enough Nowadays?

With the development of science and technology and the progress of medical technology, current medical science has developed to an unimaginable level. No matter from surgery or clinical medicine, the current medical technology has been greatly improved, from some complicated diseases that are difficult to cure at the beginning to more and more problems that have been solved. Is Medical Science advanced enough? Shall we completely rely on medical science to overcome all medical diseases? My answer is negative. The fact is none of the country’s medical level has reached the level to be invincible, resisting the invasion of various viruses. In the face of the sudden epidemic, people are still panicked and helpless. People cannot rely solely on medical science to deal with known and unknown viruses and sudden epidemic medical events.

Medical science is not everything, it is not the Medical Science that we depend upon, but the Medical Culture. Medical scientists can study the properties of viruses and develop vaccines and antidotes, but research and development take a long time, and the virus spreads much faster than scientists can develop vaccines and antidotes. Both the H1N1 and SARS outbreaks show that nowadays medical science is not advanced enough to cope with the spread and control of global large-scale epidemics. There were 18,500 laboratory-confirmed deaths due to the H1N1 and a total of 8,439 probable cases and 812 deaths from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) had been identified in 30 countries. Although many clinical experiments have been reported, the treatment of SARS is largely anecdotal, and so far no treatment consensus has been reached. The mutation rate of the virus is far faster than that of the researchers who develop vaccines and antidotes. Therefore, people should have a correct awareness of self-protection medical culture. For example, humans should stop hunting and eating wild animals, such as bats. Scientists have found that bats carry strains similar to the COVID-19 virus. It is not ruled out that because people eat wild animals, the original virus on wild animals infiltrates the human body and spreads from person to person, causing a large outbreak of epidemic viruses.

Why are more and more people so scared of facing outbreaks of infectious viruses? That’s because today’s medical science is still unable to deal with known and unknown viruses in a timely and effective manner. Taking COVID-19 as a great example, in early 2020, it was already found first in Wuhan, China. It’s already 2022, and the virus is still appearing actively, as of August 5, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a total of over 84 million cases and a total of over 880,000 deaths. More frightening, when people managed to survive an outbreak, the newly mutated virus began to infect citizens again. Everything seems to be in an endless loop. Over the past three years, many medical experts have been working hard to study vaccines and antidotes against viruses, but the effect is not very satisfactory. Many countries with poor medical care are unable to cope with the increasing number of infected patients. As a result, the number of patients and deaths keeps increasing, medical institutions are overwhelmed, and some people have lost their families or friends, some people have recovered, but they have left sequelae and cannot work normally and the global economy is also affected by COVID-19.

In my opinion, the wisest way for human beings is not to wait for medical science to cure the virus, but to prevent the virus from breeding and effectively prevent the virus from spreading from person to person. Although medical science is making continuous progress, the global environment is deteriorating. Scientists constantly discover new primitive viruses. These viruses have not yet spread among people, so we cannot be blindly optimistic and rely on medical science. Effective protection is better than medical treatment. On the one hand, let the public correctly understand the virus and use the correct method to prevent the virus, on the other hand, I believe that with the continuous progress of medical science, scientists will be able to find the antidote to the Black Death and the COVID-19 and develop a vaccine.

To sum up, we can't just take medicine and get injections every day to fight known or unknown viruses. We should still strive to improve the environment and give humans and animals a healthy living environment. Medical science and medical culture know no borders, and elite scientists from all countries work together to study virus governance and pass on good protection knowledge to the public. In addition, strengthening personal protection, such as wearing masks and exercising to increase your resistance, is also a good way to prevent the spread of epidemic viruses.
