Is Ike a Good Dog? (Defending)

Good morning, my name is Dora, the defendant’s attorney, and it is my pleasure to represent Ike LaRue on this very important case. The defendant stands here falsely accused of stealing chicken pie, chasing neighbor’s cats, howling in the middle of the night, and also ripping his owner’s very best coat. At the conclusion of the case we will ask for a verdict of not guilty. He gets sent away because he has many bad doings, and did things that did not please his owner. For example, Ike steals chicken pie when he was not supposed to do so, and he did not have chicken pie for dinner. Next, he chases the Hibbins cats and scares them much just to let the cats off the fire escape. Then, he tears his owner’s very best camel coat, and he does not say sorry. Lastly, Ike howls all through the night, making the neighbors sleep bad every day. Ike was punished and sent to obedience school for these reasons.

The first naughty thing Ike do is steal chicken pie which was freshly baked by Mrs. LaRue. Ike is not to blame as Mrs. LaRue did not tell Ike to not eat the pie, and therefore, Ike thinks that it would be okay to have pieces of pie, as he liked it much. Mrs. LaRue forgets to tell Ike to not eat the pie and save it for dinner, and her consequence was that Ike eats the pie. We cannot call it exactly stealing, as Ike didn’t know he was to not eat the pie. Also, Mrs. LaRue caused Ike many hard feelings, and made him sad. She should just have told Ike to not steal the pie a second time, and I think Ike would listen. Being naughty depends on what people think. One might think that Ike is naughty, but the other person might think that Ike is very obedient already.

Ike did not also on purpose chase and be “naughty” to the neighbor, Mrs. Higgins “cute” cats. Who knows why the cats climbed up the fire escape, and refused to come down, even when Ike bought some delicious snacks for the cats as treats if they came down. That was why Ike had no choice but to chase the cats down the fire escape outside, where it is cold and frightening. Mrs. Higgins thinks that Ike is a very naughty dog, chasing her “poor” cats down the fire escape, when it was all only to save the cats from maybe jumping down the escape and dying. We learn to look at different sides of an event to know what is truly happening, and why someone did something.

Ike also did another “disgraceful thing” by howling in the middle of the night, scaring the neighbors when they were sleeping. He howls and howls, and most of the neighbors get woken up. Mrs. LaRue left the house, making Ike more sad. Also, the same neighbors who complained of the howling were the very same ones who vacuumed in the afternoon when Ike was napping, causing him to have a very bad sleep everyday. The neighbors disturbed Ike in the afternoon when Ike was napping and having his rest, and in return Ike howled through the night, making them get the consequence they deserve.

After looking at all the “naughty things” Ike did, we see that he is not actually naughty. Firstly, Ike didn’t know that he could not eat the chicken pie until dinner. Second, he was only trying to save Higgins' cats. Third he was only howling and missing Mrs. LaRue. Ike also teared Mrs. LaRue’s coat. Mrs. LaRue says that it is her best camel coat, while Ike mentions in the story, thinking it was a ratty old coat. From this we can learn that different people think in different ways. A hundred people would think a hundred ways, differing the ways of thinking. By ripping a hole in Mrs. LaRue’s coat saved her life. The coat rip is a symbol that Mrs. LaRue was living, and not being dead in a car crash. This story is truly meaningful, and I really recommend it to you.
