Is Captain Sullenberger A True Hero?

The Miracle on the Hudson is a true event about an emergency plane crash on the water in 2009. On the 15th of January, 3 pm, Captain Sully’s flight is ready to go. After he flies the plane to about 2900-3900 feet, a group of canada geese bumps into the plane, making both of the engines broken. Captain Sully tried repeatedly to start the engines, so he called the air traffic control and called mayday. He has to make a split second decision, but he realizes he will never make it back to LaGuardia. He is going to attempt to do an emergency landing on the river. Fortunately, with his professional flying skills he landed on the water in one piece, and most importantly, nobody died. From this, I am sure that Captain Sully is a true hero.

Captain Sully is truly a hero, as he saved everyone’s life. Nine out of ten airplane crashes would include the death of everyone but in Captain Sully’s case, he did not cause harm or death to anybody on board, showing us that he is very professional. He knew that landing on land would be impossible, as the engines would not go that far at all. He chose his only hope carefully but quickly and landed on water with hope that he would save everyone on board as a captain.True heroes are ones that are courageous to take risks and save everyone, not people who don’t care and try to go the easier way to have a greater chance of failing.

Another reason is that Captain Sully has a lot of strengths and skills at hand. He is very brave to attempt an emergency landing on a body of water, when most pilots would just try flying back to land. Captain Sully was also very calming and steady when he knew that people might die, talking in a manner that is very soothing to the other passengers and crew, making the mood not so terrifying. He also has the power to make good decisions under a lot of pressure that includes 156 people’s lives. A hero does not have to be strong or powerful, but mentally powerful is the most important thing.

Captain Sully is truly a hero because he changed what people thought about their lives and familiy. Ten years after this happened, the passengers came back together to talk about the moment in the plane. The accident made Tripp Harris a better father and husband, also spending more time with family than before. He realized that he would have missed many important parts of his life if he didn’t turn around and spend more time with his family. Pam Seagle also spent more time with loved ones, including a sister whom she had a falling out with. It gave her clarity around her life priorities and importance of her beloved family. Sheila Dail (one of the flight attendants) gets to see 3 grandsons also being very happy and content with her life. "I have a lot more gratitude about my life," said Sheila Dail. '' He helped people to realize how important family, support and most importantly, their lives are in their possible moment of death.

In conclusion, Miracle on the Hudson is a true story that happened, making a miracle from a terrifying event that was later made into a movie. Captain Sully is really a true hero because he saved everyone’s lives, which is very different from what we expect in most situations, death of everyone on the plane being a huge tragedy. Captain Sully changed that, saving all 155 people on the plane without a single death. Secondly, he has a lot of mental strength, being able to control himself in the worst situation one could ever imagine. He is also very professional at his job. Captain Sully made people change what they think about their lives, honoring family much more and being thankful for being alive. From all the reasons listed above, Captain Sully is really a true hero.
