Introduction Of My Favorite Art - Starry Night

Starry Night was painted by Vincent van Gogh in June 1889. It depicted the view from Vincent’s room at the asylum, which was an institution where people with mental illnesses were confined. It included a village, a very tall tree that seemed to be reaching for the sky, some bright stars that looked like suns, rolling hills, and white wispy clouds floating in the sky. This masterpiece is now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Firstly, I have personal experience with a copy of this painting. In my cousins’ home, there is a lego copy of the Starry night encased in glass placed on top of the piano. My aunt would always tell us not to play soccer in the house, for fear that it might knock down the lego copy, and I always listened, because I would always admire its beauty for a long time. The clouds would make me think of breath on a cold winter day, the village would let me think of far away places such as the villages in the mountains. So, this painting lets me think of many other beautiful things.

Secondly, I like the painting technique used to paint this painting. Vincent used a technique called impasto, in which a painter directly applies the paints onto the canvas and then mixes them with their fingers. This way, the painting’s colors mix together. When I observe this painting, I can see small lines of color mixed into the painting, when I look at it, it seems to have fur. Using this method, Vincent made the painting more realistic and alive. So, this is the technique that Vincent used for this painting.

Last but not least, this painting shows Vincent's imagination and observations. The village in the painting is imaginary, instead of being real. Even though Vincent didn’t see the village when he looked out of his room of the asylum, he used his imagination and pictured a village in the scene. Starry Night is a detailed and precise painting, it captures the way that the stars, moon, and the candles in the houses shine. It also is detailed in every window and door. So, this painting is a combination of creativity and detailed observations.

In conclusion, Starry Night was painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889,  and it shows the view from his room at the asylum. Overall, this is my favorite art because I have been with a copy of it before and I admire the skill used to paint this masterpiece. I also like it because it is creative and detailed, which inspires me. I hope it can inspire more people to be more creative.
