Everybody has different kinds of art they like, so what’s your favorite art? Is it a sculpture, an oil painting, or a ceiling painting? Well, my favorite art is an oil painting, called Girl With The Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer. Let’s have a brief introduction about the painter. Johannes is considered one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age along with Rembrandt. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful provincial genre painter. He produced relatively few paintings, primarily earning his living as an art dealer. He was not wealthy at his death, leaving his wife in debt. Now, here are the three reasons why I like this painting.
Firstly, this painting had a funny story behind it with the people who worked in the museum. One day, the workers grabbed a painting which was Johannes’ and they looked at the painting. When they were about to hang it on the wall, one of the workers said that the girl’s lip’s color was fading, because it should have been blood red. So, they got some paint, and they painted it. Then, they found the painting was even uglier than before! Suddenly they realized the painter actually wanted the painting to be like this, so when the paint hadn’t dried, they used a cloth to rub the paint back to its normal look. What a bunch of hilarious and funny workers!
Secondly, Johannes painted this painting for a reason. Despite the fact that Vermeer experimented endlessly with approaches to create the appearance of three-dimensional space and represent the impact of natural light, research suggests that he worked mostly within the confines of Northern European painters’ traditional studio methods.Vermeer's ultimate goal was to produce a tronie that reflected one moment in time, so that onlookers could create their own stories about the subject. Another distinguishing feature of Girl with a Pearl Earring is the girl's clothing, particularly her turban. During Vermeer's time, the turban was a popular prop for tronies because of its deep folds and robust shades, which allowed artists to show off their skills and abilities. Vermeer just had a goal and painted a fascinating painting.
Thirdly, Vermeer's painting is super famous. The enigmatic mystery of Vermeer’s subject has been a subject of fascination amongst art historians and enthusiasts for many centuries. One of the most intriguing aspects of the painting is that no one actually knows who the sitter for the painting actually was. Instead, she is a ‘tronie’ or an imaginary character, which Vermeer has dressed up in sumptuous fabric and pearl earrings. Many writers believe Vermeer has idealized his model to fit a particular type, giving her smooth, flawless porcelain skin, red, moist lips, and large, glistening eyes that meet ours with a soulful, intimate gaze. Vermeer was a very good painter, and his painting skills led his painting to become famous.
In conclusion, I like Vermeer’s painting because of these three reasons: Firstly, this painting had a funny story behind it with the people who worked in the museum. Secondly, Johannes painted this painting for a reason. Thirdly, Vermeer's painting is super famous. Now this painting is in the Mauritshuis museum, so I recommend you guys can all see it and take a photo of it. Be sure to look at the background because this really is a very very beautiful painting. It’s so beautiful that you won’t even take your eyes off it. I hope you have a fun time there at the museum and a good time looking at the arts.
