The United States government may have been prejudiced against certain groups of immigrants because of specific stereotypes, but this just led to the creation of unfair laws that discriminated against those groups of immigrants. One example of an unfair law is the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prevented almost all Chinese immigrants from coming to the United States, and prevented Chinese immigrants from becoming American citizens. The government made these unfair laws because some immigrants don’t get proper legal permission, and so, they aren’t allowed legally in the United States. Some people think that immigrants steal jobs that rightfully belong to the American citizens, despite the immigrants providing a welcome boost to the economy and making valuable contributions to our society.
Currently there are two sides of the extremely controversial debate about the immigration laws. The side that wants immigration to continue says that immigrants help our community by bringing extra help and a fresh viewpoint. The other side thinks that immigrants steal jobs and take up space. Immigrants do take up space, but they use it wisely. Most immigrants are just running away from disasters, and we should do our best to accommodate them. Barely any immigrants have any malicious intent, and those who do are often caught in hours, if not minutes. Only eleven million out of the total two hundred forty million immigrants don’t have the proper legal clearance. Those who don’t want immigration to continue think that all immigrants should be deported because of these eleven million. But that’s not fair. And despite the disagreement, one thing’s for sure: immigrants will continue coming from all across the world and becoming part of the United States' rich history and culture.
We have to understand that immigrants are often just looking for a better life. The United States government is beginning to understand this. They have made laws that help combat discrimination against immigrants based on race. One example of a law they have made is the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 which abolished restrictions on immigration based on your race or nationality. The American government is much more fair towards immigration now. Prejudice and discrimination may have been mostly stopped in terms of immigration, but we still have to stay vigilant for those who discriminate based only on people’s home country. We are close to a solution to a problem that has plagued us for centuries.
Immigration to the United States speaks about many issues the United States has had with immigration, and how controversial it was, but we have to keep on supporting immigrants and making sure not to discriminate against them. We must continue our work and keep on making immigration fairer and fairer. We have to remember that they're just probably seeking help and refuge. Through open mindedness and welcoming gestures, we can allow immigrants to join our community and make many contributions that can help our society. All people just add to the social diversity in the United States that makes it unique. Instead of convincing the government to stop all immigrations to our country, convince them to do the opposite and open our borders and welcome all, no matter their race, social status, or gender.
