Human vs Nature - YOUR FOOD CHOICES AFFECT EARTH'S CLIMATE

Humans and nature always exist with each other in the world. The changes in nature usually have a big impact on human life. Nowadays, the environment is being destroyed by humans and it’s really serious for us to solve this problem. The relationship between humans and nature is more likely the change of resources. However, while humans are using the resources from nature, humans are also destroying nature. Scientists are finding methods to prevent or mostly reduce this kind of destruction. The most significant part of the destruction that people do to nature is pollution. Some common kinds of pollution are air pollution and water pollution, but one pollution that most people will ignore is the pollution from the food we eat. So, we’re going to talk about how foods cause pollution to our environment.

It's obvious that when people transport food to other places like shops or groceries by lorries or other transportation, it will release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses which will pollute the environment. Also, when producing food, the machines that farmers use will also produce greenhouse gasses. These greenhouse gasses come from burning fossil fuels like gasoline and natural gas. These gasses are produced by farm machinery, on the way to shops and groceries to buy food, and also when cooking food. People release greenhouse gasses when they do all these actions, and also fermentation in the guts of ruminant livestock releases methane. This kind of pollution is very hard to totally disappear but it’s still harmful to nature.

Also, when growing food, things like pesticides and other chemical substances will pollute the environment. The costs while making food take resources like water irrigating the crops, fertilizer, and other chemical substances that have been used to kill pests, will all have a negative influence on the environment. Some other influence that is not very noticeable is that animals might make the soil harden which could lead to soil that can't absorb water when raining, some fertilization could pollute the underground water which will cause corrosion of the land. Instead of having a bad impact on nature, fertilization, and other chemical substances all will make humans sick or toxic. So, the pesticides and other chemistries we use for increasing the crops will not only affect nature but also affect humans’ health.

One point that many people will usually ignore is that eating more meat will produce more greenhouse gasses. A survey in the 1900s examined 65000 adults about what they usually eat in the year and the researchers research the amount of greenhouse gasses that 100 kinds of common foods produce. From the new analysis, a diet including 50 to 99 grams of meat per day releases more carbon dioxide than vegans. From this analysis, the researchers concluded: “demonstrates that reducing the intake of meat and other animal-based products can make a valuable contribution to climate change mitigation”. There are also some other benefits of reducing the consumption of meat. Planting plant-based food costs less water and resources so it’ll be easier for areas where people are always feeling hungry to plant plants.

In conclusion, nature is one of the most important things in our lives and we should protect nature to let it give more benefits to our daily lives. Some destruction is ineluctable, but some are avoidable. Human versus nature does not just include the pollution produced by food, but also many other factors. But just from the destruction of the nature of food, we can see that people can’t stop the pollution made by producing and transporting foods and don’t use chemistries like pesticides while growing foods, however, people can eat less meat healthily and possibly reduce the pollution because of eating too much meat. Furthermore, we need to balance the relationship between us and nature.
