How to Handle Bullies

The story, The Hundred Dressestalks about a polish american girl named wanda. Wanda's one faded blue dress and boots, caked with mud from the walk from Boggins Heights, symbolize her family's poverty. Her dress is faded because she only has one to wear, despite her wish that she had a wardrobe filled with colorful dresses, shoes, and hats. A girl named Peggy first teases Wanda about her last name, Petronski. One day, tired of all the teasing and taunting, she claimed to have a hundred dresses and sixty pairs of shoes, but nobody believed her. Peggy frequently teases Wanda about the hundred dresses, and worse, Peggy's reluctant sidekick, Maddie, joins the taunting to avoid getting teased. This resulted in Wanda having to leave town to go to another city, and having her father write a letter to inform the teacher.

Bullying is a form of harassment, verbal and physical. Sometimes leading to self doubt, depression and suicide as the bullying continues. Bullies use hurtful words and actions on purpose to discourage others. Anyone can get bullied, even adults and anyone can be a bully. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. One essential prerequisite is the perception (by the bully or by others) of an imbalance of physical or social power. There are four main types of bullying that occur, these include physical, social, verbal and cyberbullying, all four of these have extreme effects on the person's wellbeing and safety such as a change in behavior, attitude and aggression. This will make the person being bullied Both physical and emotional bullying are meant to intimidate and demean another person. It can make that person feel weak and inferior

The psychological effects of bullying include depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, self-harming behavior (especially for girls), alcohol and drug use and dependence, aggression, and involvement in violence or crime (especially for boys). Cyberbullying – bullying that happens with computers or mobile devices – has also been linked to mental health problems. Compared with peers who were not cyberbullied, children who were cyberbullied report higher levels of depression and thoughts of suicide, as well as greater emotional distress, hostility, and delinquency. The physical effects of bullying can be obvious and immediate, such as being injured from a physical attack. However, the stress of being bullied can also lead to physical problems over time.

When I was in kindergarten, there was this bully who is also named Peggy on the bus. She said swear words right in front of me, and called me names with a boy named joseph. They were two grades bigger than me, so I had to defend myself using that same thing Peggy did to me. I tried many ways to stop them, for example, I’ve been assertive to them, but it did not work. It went on and on, and I began to feel fear when I got on the bus. After school, I wished to go home really really badly because I can still hear the sounds of them bothering me. The bus monitor didn’t even care about us saying that it was not a big deal while she was dealing with the kids smaller than us. Until second grade when I finally had it. Peggy got suspended for a few days and I changed buses. That is an example of Verbal bullying.

When we are bullied, we can think of a few ways to help us. For Cyber bullying , awareness is the key to prevent online harassment. We should make the children aware from an early age so they are always cautious. For Verbal Bullying, Try ignoring them and walking away at first. Just stay calm and keep your emotions to yourself, since the bully is probably trying to get a reaction out of you. For Physical Bullying, Keep a calm steady voice, Keep good eye contact, Keep your hands to your side, and Say what you think and feel in a confident way. And for Social Bullying, isolate yourself and withdraw from all social situations, online and face to face. This is a natural emotion as you try to protect yourself. Here are the ways that we can face the bullies that we fear, and with our positivity, we can deal with it.
