How to Handle Bullies

The Hundred Dresses is a realistic fiction by Eleanor Estes. It talks about a Polish girl named Wanda Petronski being bullied in class because of her name. In an art contest, she got the first prize for her drawing of a hundred different dresses, which was what she lied to her classmates about. One day, she left the town and moved to a new place. Her two good friends, Peggie and Maddie tried to contact her, but eventually failed. After some time, the school received a letter from Wanda, which wrote that she wanted her classmates to share the hundred dresses she drew.

Bully is a behavior of hurting or intimidating others. It is considered as an imbalance of power which often occurs when the bully mistreats someone else more vulnerable or not powerful by action or by words. It is an aggressive move that does not happen just once or twice, but often over a period of time, and eventually becomes a habit of the person who bullies. It can happen to adults in society, and even worse to children during school time. Because of the cruelty and the damage caused, we need to take action right away when being bullied.

I think bullying is an unacceptable behavior among children for several reasons. Not only can it cause physical threat, but it may also lead to serious emotional damages, such as loneliness, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. When a student is bullied, the physical and mental mistreatment and the distraction can lead to learning weariness and even hateness of the school. As a result, it may lower the academic progress and overall grades. If not handled properly, the person who experiences bullying during childhood will very likely bear the unwanted pressure for the rest of his or her life.

When being bullied, it is important to take actions to reduce or stop the inappropriate actions. The first thing I would do is to report the issue to the teacher and my parents right away, and let them be aware of the situation. Hopefully they will get involved and protect me from further damage. If the bullying behavior persists and continues to annoy me, I will avoid personal contact and any engagement with the bully, so that he or she has no excuse to pick up on me again. Meanwhile, it is vital to improve my physical and mental states to be well prepared for the worst case scenario.

In conclusion, I think The Hundred Dresses is a both touching yet educational book. It talks about bullying, which is a very serious societal problem and can lead to various negative impacts on the bullied. The action is the not sole responsibility of the bully, but also involves the bystanders who make the situation worse. When being bullied, we should stay calm and seek support from people around us. It is also important to be physically and mentally strong, so we can say no to bullying.
