Critics of Frankenstein - Frankenstein and Byproducts

Frankenstein is a famous gothic novel written by the author, Mary Shelly. This book is about a smart and gifted scientist named Victor, who succeeded in giving life to one of his own creations. However the monstrous and horrifying presence that the creature had, terrified Victor and he abandoned his own creation. Alone and angered, the creature was left to fend for himself in the new world. The rest of the story of the creation was told through letters between Victor and Robert, a man he met. In these letters, he describes the danger that the creature has brought, to his family, while yearning for connection with someone. Throughout this story, readers can learn about the importance of scientific responsibility and the impact of rejecting and leaving the creature alone and lonely.

Creation of another species has many consequences involved in it. Prometheus is another character from Greek mythology. Humans were dying, cold, with nothing to eat. Prometheus decided to steal fire from Zeus in order to help the survival of the humans. Zeus punished him for creating and letting humans live by hanging him on a cliff and each day, his body would get eaten forever. This story has a similar theme as the novel Frankenstein. Victor, in Frankenstein, and Prometheus from Greek mythology. They both have the capability to create humanity, just like God, but there are a lot of consequences that go through it, like how Prometheus was punished forever and the danger that the creation of Frankenstein had brought to him. The author had based this story’s themes to the story of Prometheus and the danger of the creation of a living creature.

The capability of being God, and creating creatures like humans can not be done by anyone in the world. In this novel, Frankenstein, it shows, clearly, the trouble when creating a species or a creature that you have to take care and look out for. The responsibility that Victor had for his creation was ignored by the look that the creation had. This caused the creation to become very upset and started to hunt down the whole Frankenstein family. Similarly, you have to have all the virtues of God, like being humble, selfless, and caring for the creation, not like how Victor was. These virtues, independently, are hard to accomplish as a person in life, and even harder to maintain and follow these virtues all the way throughout life. Even disobeying these virtues a little bit, it will have a great effect on the world. Also, with such a great power that God has it will be hard to control the power to do things that may be bad for the world. All these reasons show how regular people do not have the power to govern another species like God has done.

There are always imperfect inventions that people have made in the whole history of people, but an imperfect creature may be worse. The creation that Victory had made was imperfect and he left it alone, not knowing what it would do. This creation turned into a monster and tried to kill the family. This shows how an imperfect creation of a living thing can cause a monster that may destroy the world that you are living in. Working robots and living creatures that people make can become rebellious with their own personalities, if they are built imperfectly. This also further proves how hard it is to become like God and be able to control the creation, when it is created because creations may be imperfect, but you can’t risk creating imperfect creations because they cause monsters and death to their world and the world that you are living in.

The novel Frankenstein has taught many lessons to the world of how inventions that people make might hurt the world someday. This story has talked about the danger in three ways, how this theme relates to the story of Prometheus, the difficulties of governing another species, and how imperfect creations may lead to a new monster. In this story, Victor failed to see his responsibility in the creature he had just made and just left it by itself. The loneliness that the creature had throughout the story caused him to rebel and try to kill Victor’s family. This shows the problems of creating this creature and how a creature can become a monster with one singular imperfect action that the inventor or scientist has made. Frankenstein is a very unique novel that may teach the world a lesson of what not to do in the future, when science is complex enough to create another species.
