Critical Review of The Thirty Nine Steps: What Makes Hannay Succeed?

The man-on-the-run book Thirty-Nine Steps, was written by the author John Buchan. Thirty-Nine Steps is most famous because ist was the first man-on-the-run book ever written. This book starts off with talking about the boredom of life. One day a neighbor comes into his house claiming to fear for his life. This man later reveals his name is Franklin P. Scudder., a freelance spy. One day, Hannay finds Scudder lying dead in his house. Hannay chose to run away because the police would think that he was the murderer of Scudder. While running away from the police, he faces many problems such as facing hunger and thirst and being captured by multiple people. To escape from all of the policemen and pursuers, Hannay uses a lot of techniques and courage to get away. He soon succeeds in running away and cracks the code that Scudder had in the notebook.

Unique and challenging skills are needed when people are in a difficult situation. At the start of this book, to run away from people trying to pursue him, Hannay disguised himself as the milkman. Not only did he just change his clothes, his voice was the same as the milkman. This skill takes a lot of talent. Hannay also has a lot of other skills like negotiating skills to convince others, knowledge of how to make a bomb, and is very athletic. These skills helped Hannay find a way to escape from places in crucial times in this book. Skills are needed in life and Hannay is a great example of how someone can use skills they have to help themselves. Skills are very useful in your life. Even if the skill you have is unusual, you will most likely use it during your life. For example, Hannay had the knowledge of making bombs that he used to get out of jail. Skills are very important and can be used any time in your life.

People need bravery to execute important decisions and take risks. Hannay had to use courage the whole story to survive. In the Thirty-Nine Steps, there are a lot of instances when he used courage. Some examples are when he was confronting the conspirators and exposing the Black Stone, jumping off the train, and blowing up a house. These things that he did to escape from policemen chasing him, normal people can’t do. Courage is something everyone has, but Hannay had enough courage to run away and confront enemies, trying to put him into jail. Also, with all the things he did, he put the country's safety before his own life. This shows how much he cares for others. When Hannay was in danger, he not only had the braviary to do everything he did to escape, but made sure that he did not put the whole country in danger. Bravery has a great impact on your life and decisions.

Hannay takes many dangerous and courageous risks in this story. He was ready to sacrifice and fight for his country. This is called patriotism, which means that you have devotion to your country. Hannay was always ready to sacrifice himself for his country. Even though Hannay was wrongly accused and had to leave his luxurious life, still was patriotic. Patriotic people help their country and have responsibility for every action they do. He cared for the people and not only for himself. Just like the hero we all know, James Bond, Ethan Hunt, and the Avengers, Hannay also had heroism. People in this world have created a lot of heroes in stories and movies. These heroes do not just entertain us, but they encourage us to be better and look up to them. They set examples for people of how helping others can be such an honorable yet a courageous thing.

In the book Thirty-Nine Steps, Hannay gets pursued but eventually he finds a way to run away from his pursuers. There are many things that help Hannay succeed such as skills, bravery, and patriotism. The skills he had helped him along the way. An example is that he had the skill to disguise himself as others. This skill was used a lot during the pursuit. Every time the skills helped him in crucial situations. During the risky situations that he was in, Hannay had to make important decisions on his next move. It takes bravery to decide on doing important things. Hannay didn’t hesitate when he made important decisions because of courage. Hannay put the country's safety before his own safety. He felt that he, himself, was responsible for the country's safety. Thirty-Nine Steps is a very action-packed book that will always leave you on your toes, wanting to read more.
