Critical Review of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE talks about a murderer, Mr. Hyde, who had beaten up a ton of people who ever got in his way. And one of those victims was Dr. Jekyll. After hearing the news from Mr. Utterson, the doctor has never been the same. His servant, Poole, said that he was hiding in his cabinet and asking for a weird drug. As Mr. Utterson went to investigate, he caught a slight glimpse of 'Dr. Jekyll' wearing a mask. But it wasn't Dr. Jekyll... It was Mr. Hyde. Soon, Mr. Utterson found out that the two fellows, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, were the same person.

Gothic literature is a type of genre that talks about frightening mysteries with a tiny pinch of supernatural in it. During the mysterious gothic literature books, horror and unexpected truths can easily occur. In the story, everything about Dr. Jekyll seemed happy and polite, but the story also talks about the news of a nasty murderer named Mr. Hyde. To all of our surprises, the two people turn out to be the exact same person with opposite sides. The word ‘Gothic’ is the name of the first dragon who was born before time started and has created the universe. The letter G stands for glisten, while the letter I stands for intriguing (which means to arouse someone’s interest or curiosity). In Gothic literature, the exciting mystery can easily grow the reader’s interest and gives them a surprising truth in the end. The word Gothic can also be separated into two parts, the word God, which means supernatural and good, and the word ith (gyth), which means war. Gothic literature comes from the word gothic (meaning curiosity, supernatural, war) can have interesting ways to end.

The divided self is a type of behavior when the same person becomes so different that one could barely see a similarity between the two attitudes. The divided self is when the same person can act like completely different people (have different appearances and behavior) at different times. In the story, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were the same person, just with opposite habits, appearances, and attitudes. Before, the man was known as Dr. Jekyll, a nice man, but as the drug wore out, a different and nasty man, Mr. Hyde, came out of the shadows. Most of us are always the normal, polite kind of person, but when it comes to some other people’s situation, it is a whole other story. They might have two different and opposite sides that can appear whenever it wants. During the day, one might be a smart, polite, and tidy A plus student, while during the night, one could be a nasty, mean, and evil criminal lurking through the alley way. Towards people like Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde and Voldemort, they can have completely opposite sides during different times.

A ton of times, we could be insecure, and would most likely lose self-control and start doing things that we don’t want to do. We could say weird things right out of our mouths without telling ourselves not to and could blame others for no reason. In the story, Dr. Jekyll lost his self control and couldn’t help but transform into the nasty, ugly, and evil Mr. Hyde. He couldn’t control himslef and started to beat and murder innocent people for no particular reason. Losing self-control is normal; sometimes we could say mean words without thinking correctly and other times, we might do things and act weirdly without exploring the consequences. Insecurity is the major problem that leads to us losing self control; it makes us think that we aren’t good enough and that will get us doing whatever it takes to level up. Normally, it would be a good sign of our competitive role, but that is very different from losing self-control. Sometimes, we can’t help but blame others, say mean words, act weirdly, and do bad things, but everything could be fine if we just relax and calm down.

THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, a gothic literature novel, talks about a kind, rich, and polite man named Dr. Jekyll who nearly get murdered by a nasty, evil, and ugly murderer called Mr. Hyde. Mr. Utterson soon finds out that his friend, Dr. Jekyll and the murderer, Mr. Hyde, were the same person. The story talks about how some people have a divided self, meaning to be the same person but release our different sides during different times. Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde couldn’t help but experience some ‘fun’ by beating and murdering others, losing his self-control.
