Critical Review of The Raft

The Raft, written by Jim Lamarche, talks about a boy whose name is Nicky. That summer, his dad has to go to a planting job, and has no time for Nicky. That made Nicky need to stay with his grandma. He didn’t like it at all, at first, but after a day or two he got used to it, and helped grandma with chores. One day, while walking down the river, Nicky discovers a raft, and soon asks grandma for a rope to tie the raft on. Surprisingly, grandma already knows about it, and gets ready for all that is to happen with the raft. Soon, Nicky starts to enjoy the days at grandma’s, and he likes the raft most. Everyday he races himself to the raft every time he has got, and he is very happy there.

From unhappy to happy, the boy changed his attitude enormously about staying at grandma’s cottage. At first, Nicky thought that it was going to be boring, and nothing to do, not even watching TV. And he expressed that when he went to grandma’s for a few days, he grumbled and mumbled about everything, trying to be so rude and unkind that he wanted Grandma to send him back to his father. Then, as the raft came, he suddenly changed his feelings, and tried to be quick with the chores, and wanting to go to the raft and have a little bit of fun with the river animals. He saw many animals and drew them, and had lots of fun at grandma’s until summer was over and he could go back with father again.

The Raft is like a bridge for Nicky to go and explore more of nature, on the river. He also wants to see animals on the river and keep them company. He does his chores quickly because he wants to go on the raft and see the animals. He also is very respectful to grandma, because he doesn’t want to be punished and can’t go down the river and to the raft to play with the animals. Grandma had inspired father to do well with nature, as the story first said when father says that he needs to go down to the plant. Grandma also inspires Nick, and he loves nature with all the animals, and the plants down at the river in Grandma’s cottage.

The author uses dialogue and what Nicky does to show that Nicky had changed from unlikeable and hating nature, to a boy who really cared for nature. Nicky had been rude to grandma too, despite being rude about nature. There’s no fish in this stupid river,” Nicky had called out, disgusted. That happened when grandma wanted to eat fried fish for dinner, but Nicky didn't catch a fish. There are also many lovely pictures in the story that help us understand more of the text. Nicky had slowly changed into a nature loving boy. He also helped a poor fawn who was stuck in the mud get back to its mother. Nicky had carefully carried the little fawn, who was quite afraid. Nicky had turned into a boy who loved nature.

In conclusion, the story, The Raft, tells about a boy called Nicky who had a huge change about his feelings about grandma’s place. There, from being mean and rude, he thought that it would be a boring, tiring, sad summer. But it actually turned out quite well, under the inspiration of grandma and the true nature he experiences, he changed his whole feelings, and thought more about the world’s plants. That day he found the raft, and that also helped him love nature even more. Because using the raft he could explore the river too, and go farther than on only solid ground, not on the waters. There, at grandma’s, Nicky, this child blossoms under nature. I recommend this story, and it teaches us a lot about nature and changes.
