The Monkey’s Paw written by W.W. Jacobs is a short horror story about a family and their not-very-happy- adventures with a monkey’s paw that they inherited from a friend. The paw is said to be cursed, and its powers included giving 3 separate men 3 separate wishes. However, each wish must come with a devastating sacrifice/consequence. The family starts off with their wishes with the monkey’s paw, and the first wish is to have two hundred pounds to pay off the mortgage. The family gets the two hundred pounds, but the son dies as a consequence. Soon, the mother starts missing the son very much, and she makes her husband wish that he would come back. However, at the last second possible, the man utters his last wish At his wife’s cry, he rushes to the door and to the street beyond, where the flickering of the street lamp shone on a quite empty and desolate street and empty porch.
When greed and curiosity become heavy, son, they will crush you like a block of cement. These traits are not good to have. If you have a bit, which mostly everyone does, it’s totally fine. However, if it becomes overwhelming and fills your head, it’s time to put a stop to it. Mr. White’s problems are greed and curiosity. Because he is so greedy, he took the monkey’s paw, ignorant to the dire warnings Sergeant Morris had given him. Because he is curious of what will happen, he uses the monkey’s paw and brings the tragedy upon the whole family. Mr. White problems are what brought sadness upon the family. The consequences of too much greed or curiosity can be deadly. Like the ones in the book. Think about it. When greed and curiosity must be contained. It’s your job to keep them at bay, or they’ll end up spiraling out of control.
Evilness takes place in many forms. Most deadly one you should watch out for? People taking advantage of you, or all forms. Being evil has to do with using different tactics. So, stay on high alert and watch out for any kinds. In the story, Morris takes advantage of Mr. White’s greed and curiosity and lures Mr. White into taking the monkey’s paw. However, along with the trap, he still gives Mr. White warngons about the consequences. He draw the family’s interests by hiding the truth and denying Mr. White interrogations about the monkey’s paw, and then reveals it as a “bit of magic”. One old-book tactic of drawing your attention will always be denying the truth. It might be to lure you so you fall into their trap. Evil people will always make it seem like they are not evil. Watch out for them.
Suspense in a book is like a rope. It leaves you hanging, grasping on just to know the ending. Cliffhangers are annoying. They leave you hanging, dying to know what happens next. However, it might be a way to keep you enticed. The story hangs in a world of suspense, especially at the end, when the consequences are unknown to the reader. Since the wisher cannot die unless he wishes to or because of an accident, worse things could happen, like his son coming back even though Mr. White wished him not to. This might be one of the consequences. Whenever the story is hung in suspense, the reader always wants to know what happens next. This can be a way for the author to keep the readers reading until the very end of the book or story. When you are hung on the rope of suspense, there are two options. One option is climbing up to know the ending. The other is dropping to safe ground and not knowing anything.
The Monkey’s Paw is a horror short story that spins a wonderfully dark tale, sharing many themes and lessons as the story rolls along. After the White family gets lured into the trap set up by Sergeant Morris, the family spins into chaos, loss, grief, and madness over the cursed monkey’s paw and the grief and evil consequences that are brought into their innocent lives because of it. The book tells readers, especially with a monkey’s paw, to be careful of what they wish for, and think about the consequences before doing something risky and unstable. The irony in the story is also iconic, whereas the White family thinks that the monkey’s paw will bring them blessings, but it brings them and the whole family the exact opposite.
