Critical Review of The Monkey’s Paw

“The Monkey’s Paw” written by W.W. Jacob’s is a horror story. The story talks about a mummified paw that grants an owner three wishes, but the twist is that someone they love dies. Morris tricks the white family to take the Paw, even though he knows what would happen. The White’s family make their first wish be for 200 pounds of money, this causes Herbert to die from his work. Mrs. White was so sad, that she forced Mr. White to wish for their son back. But Mr. White refused, until he gave in and wished for his son back. Then at night Mr. White heard knocking, and Mrs. White asked what it was. Then she noticed it was Herbert, but Mr. White wouldn’t let her go down stairs because he was afraid of Herbert. But she went off, down stairs, and right when she opened the door, Mr. White frantically breathed his last wish.

Human nature is a thing that every human does in their life, like being greedy, or lying, a lot of human nature is shown in the Monkey's Paw. Curiosity is shown in the book, as the White family is curious to see the monkey’s paw, and know its tale. Greediness is also shown throughout the story, like when the son is said to be an emperor to his dad, making him greedy for the money. Morris at the beginning took advantage of the White family, and let them take the paw, as their weakness was not knowing of its consequences. The White family also had an irresistible temptation from Morris, to get the paw for its three wishes, and its power. The Monkey’s paw is also a devil, it kills people, and Morris transfers the devil to the white family. Morris had also lied to the white family, by not telling them the consequences which brought the White family to despair. Here are some of human nature they show to us in the book of the Monkey’s Paw.

Fate is a destiny that you have, and you cannot change it, and you must go on with it for your entire life. Fate can be shown from human nature too, fate is in the book the monkey’s paw, here are some of them. In the story when Herbert died, Mrs. White was devastated, and sad, she was so sad that she wanted the Monkey’s paw to wish him back. So the father did so, but was scared of Herbert because he knew that he would be ruined, so he wished Herbert to be dead. This was Fate, because the mother had to live without her son, and get going with it, but instead she did not accept that and forced the dad to wish him back. One more is when Morris told them about the Monkey’s paw, it was his fate of doing it, he wanted to do it, and this is how he acted. Fate is your destiny, and you cannot change it, but just stick with it, and carry on with your life.

The author has a lot of writing skills, like foreshadowing, symbolism, or suspense in The monkey’s paw, here are all three of those writing skills. In the story when Herbert dies, the mother is outside in the cold air, lonely, the father said to go inside, so she does. This is foreshadowing, the weather is like how they feel, it is gloomy and cold, making them sad. Herbert’s grave was the symbolism of the horror story, because some horror story’s include graves, and cemeteries, because there could be zombies. Lastly, the suspense in the story is when the Monkey’s paw wishes, and who they will kill next, you will be scared. Here are some of the writing skills the author has put in the story, The Monkey’s Paw.

The story Monkey’s paw, talks about the White family having the Monkey’s paw, and bad things happen with it, like your loved one dying, and the mother going crazy about it, and they have good stuff, but in return it is mostly bad. A lot of this is just human nature, like Morris lying, and the White family being greedy for money, but with this human nature bad things will happen. Fate is also part of this, because Herbert dies, making Mrs. White go crazy, and she does not accept her fate, and tries to bring him back, but Mr. White stops Herbert from coming back. In the story, the author put many writing skills, like symbolism, of the grave, showing it is a horror story. The monkey’s paw has many things that happen in the story, but we should not do it, because we know it is bad.
