Critical Review of The Jump

There was a monkey on a ship, returning home, entertaining everybody, she jumped to a boy and took his hat, then started tearing it up. The boy didn’t know what to do at first, but after a while, he started to shout at the monkey and throwing fists at her, the boy was the ship captain’s son. The sailors were laughing at him, he flushed with anger and chased after the monkey, the monkey promptly climbed up onto the first cross beam and the boy caught up in no time. But he was just about to grab the hat when she jerked away and climbed even higher, all the way onto the highest cross beam on the top of the mast. The boy was so upset that he chose to prove victory against the monkey than for his own safety, for he has to let go of the ladder with both of his hands to reach the hat. All people on deck were paralyzed with shock because if he fell on to the deck, he would be instantly dead, but even if he did manage to get to the hat, it would be difficult for him to turn around and get back down to the mast. Then, the boy heard a cry and turned his head to see who it was, his father, the ship’s captain, was standing on the deck, holding a rifle, claiming that he will shoot his son if he didn’t jump into the water at once. He jumped, 20 brave seamen had reached him before the cold waves did, and he was brought back on deck in merely 40 seconds, he resumed breathing after a few lingering minutes of water coming out of his mouth and nose. The captain uttered a chocked cry at the sight of his pale son and hurried away so no one could see him weep.

There are many things I noticed about this passage, the first is the captain’s hidden love his son, standing up for the boy when he needed actual help, not limiting just about everything he does. In this passage, he claimed to shoot his son if he didn’t jump into the water at once, which clearly tells us that the boy normally wouldn’t listen to anybody and only would if they threatened him, so his father was right to trick his son with his gun, and it turned out to be quite effective, according to what the story told us since 20 seamen had jumped into the water to save the boy from the fall. This also tells us that the father knew his sailors and seamen very well to know for sure that they would jump into the water to save his son. We can see the hidden love at the end of the story as well, where the father runs into his cabin to prevent the other people seeing him weep, tough and harsh as he sounded, he still has a breaking point for his son’s safety.

The passage also tells us that anybody can do stupid things without thinking when they’re mad. For example, the boy gets madder and madder when the monkey takes his hat and tears it up until he loses his head completely and chases after her, the boy, however, did not realize where he was at or what he was doing by the blaze of his anger until his father came to shoot seabirds and saw his son’s attempt to climb the topmost crossbeam above the mast. This tells us that a person can lose one’s mind when they’re minds are inflamed, and we might do just about anything to get the result we wanted. This also tells us that we need to learn how to control this kind of feeling of anger, for example, you might find deep breathing and ignorance of the person (or thing) a working method, other times maybe counting to 10 helps calm you down. Finding a way for each person to calm down and realize exactly what they are doing at that moment is very important.

About Leo Tolstoy

Leo Tolstoy was born in Mosco, Russia, on August 28, 1828. His parents died when he was very young, he and his siblings were brought up by relatives. He was sent to school, but his teachers didn’t like him and ha walked out in the middle of a study. He returned home and wrote his first novel childhood and then ran up on heavy gambling. Then, he somehow became interested in the army, that was when he really started to write when there was nothing to do in a long lull, he loved writing, and he was asked to fight as an outpost at the Crimean war. These were new places to explore and write about! So he published a few books in the war while he was fighting. But when the city fell, Tolstoy was asked to make a study of the artillery action during the final assault and to report with it to the authorities in St. Petersburg, Russia. His reception in the capital was a triumphant success. Because of his name, he was welcomed into the most brilliant society. Because of his stories, he was treated as a celebrity by the cream of the literary society. In September 1862, Tolstoy married Sofya Andreyevna Bers (or Behrs), a woman sixteen years younger than himself. Daughter of a prominent Moscow doctor, Bers was beautiful, intelligent, and, as the years would show, strong-willed. The first decade of their marriage brought Tolstoy the greatest happiness; never before or after was his creative life so rich or his personal life so full. In June 1863 his wife had the first of their thirteen children. He wrote lots of the famous novels we read today, including Anna Karenina, war and peace, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Sevastopol Sketches, and resurrection. Tolstoy died in the home of the stationmaster of the small depot at Astapovo, Russia, on November 9, 1910. He was buried at Yasnaya Polyana.
