Critical Review of The Jacket

The story is about a boy who wanted a fancy jacket, but the family was too poor to buy the one he wanted, so his mom bought him an ugly day-old guacamole colored jacket instead. He was sad and wanted to cry, he kicked a ball into a garbage can and teased his dog sharply. At school, he blamed his jacket for :getting an“D”on the math quiz, his friend watching at him, girls whispering on the bars and ignoring him, teachers laughing at him, being bullied on the playground…… He thought all of this were caused by the ugly jacket. The weather was very cold, but without any hesitation he took off the jacket, then his teeth chattered and he shivered hardly, he was forced to put on the jacket again. But when finally he felt warm, he took off his jacket again. He was told to wear this jacket for 3 years. During those 3 years, his sleeves became small and the sleeve’s wound (which had been bite by the dog) got bigger. But 3 years later, he had to wear the same ugly jacket.

The boy in the story is too sensitive. The things happened at school might have been his imagination. Like the “D” on the math quiz, how can a student good at math get a “D” on the quiz? I think the boy is not good at math, so, he got a “D” on the quiz. And the “bully” event. How can you say that your jacket is ugly so the bully bullies you? The bully doesn’t care how you look like, or who you are. And, the “watching at you” event. How is looking at you a big thing? Any time different people are looking at you, and you always play with your friend, so how is that a big thing?

He chose appearance over health. When it was a cold day, he put off the jacket because of the jacket’s ugly look, and he didn’t care about his body. Health is everything’s basic, if you don’t have health you can’t go to school and you may couldn’t even get off the bed.

The family was too poor to buy the fancy coat he wanted. I think it is also a kind of “going through hardships.” It’s an experience to tell him there are many things that you might get sad, but it’s all right, just face directly to it. And it is also an experience to tell him that “appearance” doesn’t matter, “inner” is the main part.

From this story, l realized “appearance” and “health” which one is more important, and there are many things we will get sad in our life, but don’t be afraid, just face it directly. In the story the boy did something wrong, but I think if I were the boy I may do the same thing he did. It is not important that what embarrassments or sadness that you are experiencing, but the way that how you treat it is.
