Critical Review of The Hound of the Baskervilles

In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr Watson solved the mystery of the hound, which haunted the moor at Baskerville Hall at night. They found that Mr Stapleton was really a Baskerville and owned the hound, which caused Sir Charles’ death. In the end, Holmes and Dr Watson killed the hound and Mr Stapleton was gone as well. No one knows exactly what happened, but Mr Stapleton fell into the Great Grimpen Mire. The Hound of the Baskervilles was different from the other Sherlock Holmes series.

Holmes seemed not as interested in the book as he was in the other Sherlock Holmes books. Instead of his going to Dartmouth to watch Sir Henry, he sent Dr Watson. Holmes himself stayed in London. He didn’t involve himself in the case. Holmes instead sent someone to go to Dartmouth in his place. In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson work together to solve the case of who the murderer was. Instead, Holmes and Watson work separately for a time in The Hound of the Baskervilles where Watson informed Holmes of his investigations.

This was the only book out of the Sherlock Holmes series that talked about spiritualism. Mr Stapleton mentioned in the book that many of the neighbors near Baskerville Hall believed in spiritualism as the only explanation for the hound. In the other books, Holmes relied on the facts to figure everything out. For example, in A Study in Scarlet, Holmes determined the murderer’s age and complexion. The Hound of the Baskervilles had many opinions, such as spiritualism.

In the other books, the people who died were killed by their own actions. The Hound of the Baskervilles includes a hound that didn’t do anything except scaring people so they kill themselves. Sir Charles died of a heart attack from running from the hound, while Joseph Stangerson was killed by someone stabbing him. The hound never did anything to make Sir Charles die. It was his own choice to run. He could have gone to the nearest place of shelter, but instead, he decided to run farther away. The murderer in A Study In Scarlet gave his victims no choice.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is different from all the other books that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has written because it contained spiritualism and Holmes seemed not as interested in the case. The people also died from their own choices. Other Sherlock Holmes books used facts to determine everything. Instead, The Hound of the Baskervilles has spiritualism, which is not a fact. It was only the opinion of people. Holmes seemed very interested in all the other Sherlock Holmes books, but he did not seem interested in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Sir Charles died from a heart attack that he got from running from the hound. The hound gave him a choice to run or to get somewhere safe where the hound could not get to. In the other books, the murderer or the bad guy did not leave a choice.
