Critical Review of The Hound Of The Baskervilles

This book, The Hound Of The Baskervilles, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, talks about an attempted murder inspired by a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. According to an old legend, the Baskerville family has been cursed since the English Civil War, when a Hugo Baskerville kidnapped and led to the death of a teenage girl on the moors, only to be killed in turn by a giant demon hound. Sir Charles believed in the plague of the hound and so did Mortimer, and they’re worried about the next in line, Sir Henry Baskerville. Holmes and two others arrive at Baskerville Hall, when a murderer named Selden escapes from a nearby prison and hides in the mountains. At that time, all sorts of puzzling events and complex character relations have been troubling Watson. Unknown to everyone, not even his friend Watson, Holmes has been hiding out on the moor and solving the mystery.

This kind of literature is usually related to crime, and can reflect human nature through the motives and actions of crime. In this story, John Stapleton kills Sir Chalse, And then he‘s doing anything to kill Sir Henry, even using the demon Hound legend to cover his criminal. And abusing his wife to do so. The real devil is not the hound, but humanity, human nature. It’s dark, dark as hell, and they’re greedy, cruel and violent. As reflected in another book, The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, human nature is selfish. And there’s Selden, also a murder. Through all these criminals, we can see the dark side of human nature took hold of them, to kill and commit crimes for their own benefit. Inside all of us, there’s something like John Stapleton or Selden, something dark.

A smart murderer does not commit a crime without a cover, but by hook or by crook. They often hide their crimes and escape by disguising them as natural deaths or murder by the other. In this story, John Stapleten uses some supernatural thing to hide his crime. He uses the legend, by fake evidence and makes others believe the legend was real, to kill people and achieve his own evil purpose. Stapleten designs a perfect murder, he fakes the supernature, uses his wife. This is more of a reflection of his evil. And as long as it's a crime, even the best designs of a criminal have bugs, that is, the legend couldn't exist. At last the truth was discovered by Sherlock Holmes and John Stapleten is killed.

At that time, women did not have the right to inherit, so their status was generally not as high as that of men. But in this series, Sherlock Holmes has high respect for women, so we can figure out that Sir Conan Doyle also had high respect for women, so he gave it to his characters. When we talk about murderer, it’s always a man, but in a lot of Sherlock Holmes Series, the murderer is a female, or women are involved in crime. But in many case women are victims and are killed, sometimes also be used by the murderer, because they generaly are weak, if they meet someone bad like Mr. Stapleten can easily be taken advantage of by marriage. And like Mrs. Barrymore, she is a nice lady but she somehow help the murderer, some good women are considered bad, because of this.

Such an exquisite story, based on complicated character design and rigorous logic, and the novel stood out from the other Holmes series was the wonderful description of ghastly setting. The author was focus on the process of reasoning, and the readers enjoyed the process of solving the case under the attractive guidance. The book is exactly worth reading and thinking .
