Critical Review of the Gold Cadillac

In THE GOLD CADILLAC, Father bought a Gold Cadillac, and everyone was happy except for Mother. But everyone stopped laughing once Father decided to drive the car to Mississippi. Everyone knew that everything was white property at that place. There, everything had the signs "WHITE ONLY; COLORED NOT ALLOWED", and Father was soon arrested for a crime he didn't commit. The policemen thought that he stole that Gold Cadillac, obviously because he was black. After he experienced that, he never drove the Gold Cadillac again. Soon, he sold it to save for a house, and everyone, including Mother, was happy.

In most places, there is a lot of racial discrimination towards the colored, where others might blame them for nothing. Every day, colored people are getting bullied and blamed by white people, when they have done nothing wrong. In the story, the colored was arrested and accused because of racial discrimination. A family of four had just bought a Gold Cadillac from the family’s hard work. But at the same time, they were accused of ‘stealing’ that car in Mississippi, when they had never committed a crime before. In their little neighborhood, colored people could freely walk on the streets or go to grocery stores. But near Mississippi or other cities, only white people can be seen going into restaurants or buying a hamburger. The worst thing was, the white never even received a warning from the police for committing a dangerous crime. On the other hand, the colored might get arrested because of driving a car on the highway or walking on the sidewalk. Even when the colored have done nothing wrong, people are still getting accused because of racism.

A family member’s respect and personality towards other family members can greatly affect one’s future. While a kind and joyful family member might have a bright future, an unhappy and rude one might not. In the story, the family members in a family have a lot of different opinions and personalities. Father, for example, was always the same hard-working, cheerful, and someone that no one could look down on. He loved making others laugh and surprising people, like buying a gorgeous Gold Cadillac. The children, Wilma and Lois, were curious little children, but they were also very protective of their family. The uncles and aunts of the household, just like Father, were also very funny, happy, and joyful people. On the other hand, Mother was a bit different, especially after Father got the Gold Cadillac. She would be unhappy when everyone else was cheerful, but eager when everyone else was worried. But after a big tragedy with the Gold Cadillac, Mother became the normal, supportive mother she always used to be. Each family member’s different opinion and personality leads to a set of special events.

When making choices or decisions, we must think about all of the possible results of this action. When we are making choices, it is important to think if it is safe enough to do and if it is too risky. The story showed how people were dealing with the choices they made. Father had to make a lot of choices, from buying the Gold Cadillac to selling it in order to save up for a house. When he was buying the Gold Cadillac, he knew that most people would be excited and proud of him, but Mother wasn’t. Even though she wasn’t too happy about the new car, Father still excited a lot of other people. But when he decided to drive to Mississippi with that car, everyone’s smile turned upside-down. Everyone knew the consequences of that, but Father didn’t change his mind. even after his family would go with him on that dangerous trip. But soon, he learned his lesson and finally sold the Gold Cadillac and started to save up for something a lot more important. When making decisions, we have to balance the risk of this action and think clearly about the results.

THE GOLD CADILLAC talks about the life of a family after Father bought a Gold Cadillac. Everyone was excited because of the car, except for Mother, who disapproved of it. But after driving the car to Mississippi and nearly getting arrested, Father realized that some things are a lot more important than just a car. Racial discrimination is the act of accusing and blaming colored people for no valid reason. Each family member has a different personality or opinion, but just the slightest difference can change a whole family’s future. Making choices and decisions could be very hard, especially since we have to balance the risk of that decision.
