Critical Review of The Bracelet

The bracelet was written by Yoshiko Uchida about a Japanese family during WW2, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. We are reading in the first person perspective as Ruri, the youngest of this Japanese family. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, America has put all jananese family in a concentration camp including Ruri’s family. After the attack, their house looked abandoned, a lot of things were broken, and the situation was bad. Right before they were about to leave for the camp, Ruri’s best friend, Laurie Madison, made her a bracelet so that Ruri would remember her. When they went to the concentration camp, Ruri was scared, and nervous. There were many, many Japanese in the church where they were supposed to meet up. The thought of them living in an apartment is very good because she thought that it was going to be luxurious and comfortable, although the reality with the apartment is that it is really bad quality and very dirty.

Symbolism is used in this story, the bracelet symbolizes friendship. The bracelet is a sign of friendship, even though friendship doesn’t need to be seen physically. Friendship is very important to everyone, it is more mental than physical. It is in your heart, you don’t need to show it by giving someone else a present, although you can. The bracelet also sort of symbolizes insecurity. Laurie gave Ruri the bracelet because she was insecure about their friendship, she thought that maybe Ruri might forget that she was her best friend, so every time Ruri sees the bracelet she remembers her. Although if Ruri was a true friend she will never forget her childhood best friend. Ruri also thought that the bracelet was very special, it will keep the friendship attached, but her mother is very right when she said “Those are things we can carry in our hearts and take with us no matter where we are sent”.

World War Two has caused a lot of damage to a lot of places and a lot of families. It had made a lot of families get separated, the man of the family had to go to ww2 to fight and battle, it caused either a few years of separation, or a lifetime of separation. World War Two is caused by the german after the treaty of versaille from World War 1, they had the same plan as WW1, to take over the world. The Second World War was more bloody than the first, causing a lot more soldiers to die on the battlefield. In the second world war there was a very important event, the attack on Pearl Harbor, causing a lot of Japanese to be sent to concentration camps. Ww2 caused a lot of damage to a lot of houses also.

We can’t judge someone by their country, and we also can’t judge a country by its leader. By someones’ appearance we also can’t judge their personality, or nationality. Just because Japan invaded the United States of America, doesn’t mean all Japanese in America are not loyal Americans and they want to invade america. Ruri’s family are loyal Americans although they are still sent to concentration camps because they are japanese. Just because a country did something bad it doesn't mean all people in the country or people who have that nationality are bad as well. Just like just because Putin (president of Russia) did something bad, Russians are bad as well, or the president of Iran.

Yoshiko Uchida wrote the bracelet about a Japanese family after Pearl Harbor was attacked. This story uses symbolism. The bracelet represents friendship. Despite the fact that friendship does not need to be seen physically, the bracelet is a symbol of friendship. During World War II, many places and many families suffered damage. The war caused a lot of families to be separated. The man of the family had to go to war and fight. It caused either a few years or a lifetime of separation. We cannot judge someone by their country, or a country by its leader. By someone's appearance we also can’t judge their personality, or nationality.
