Critical Review of My Diary from Here To There

My Diary from Here to There by Amada Irma Pérez is a book mostly about the feelings of a girl named Amada when she moves to the U.S. from Mexico. It shows how Amada feels worried and scared at the beginning, how she felt excited at the end, and how her feelings changed throughout the story. Amada pours her worry, fear, and hope all into her diary, which she keeps with her when they move to the U.S. How can she leave her best friend behind? What if she can't learn English? What if her family never returns to Mexico? In this story, Amada learns that she can move to a new country while still being connected to your old identity.

Attitude matters a lot when change occurs. When you move to a new place, your attitude can make your new surroundings either worse or better, depending on your choice. In the story, Papa and Mama are both very optimistic for the opportunities that they hope they will face in the U.S., and Amada’s brothers are all very excited to move to a new country. Papa’s attitude made things easier. He was very optimistic and hopeful the whole way through, and was never discouraged. He worked hard for his family’s green cards, and succeeded in the end. When moving or changing into different surroundings, the thing that you might want to think about is your attitude. If you put yourself into a perspective of good, you will see good things. If you put yourself into a perspective of bad, you will only see bad things.

Change can happen as in physical change and emotional change. Not only can change happen physically, like moving, but it can also happen emotionally, like a change of heart or feelings. Amada’s feelings changed throughout the story. At first, when she learned that she would be moving to the U.S, She was very distressed and worried. However, after she moved to the U.S., she realized what opportunities that it held and how she can still enjoy the U.S. while still being connected to her Mexican roots. I think that change is just a part of life, and that it is always better to accept it than to refuse it. You can’t control it if change comes. You either accept it and enjoy it, or refuse it and not enjoy it.

Immigrants had the courage to abandon their home country and start fresh for a new country. Sometimes, people will leave their current homes to find a new home in hope of better opportunities or jobs. In this book, Amada and her family move to America in hope of finding a job for Papa. The term "American Dream" was quoted by James Truslow Adams in 1931, saying that "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. Amada and her family might have followed this motto, too. A dream is worthless without effort. It is only worthy if it is given effort to achieve. Following a dream can lead you to success, or not. But it has a better chance of becoming true if you try to make it come true.

The book My Diary from Here to There is a great example of religion, culture, identity, and emotions. Amada’s emotions change throughout the story as she learns how to connect with her identity while being away from her home country. She learns how to accept change, and embrace it instead of fighting it. Amada learns valuable lessons throughout this book, including change, identity, and emotions. The author really describes how Amada changed throughout this book, and I would recommend it to any reader for this story is a great example and idea of how you can still be emotionally close to your hometown while physically very far away from it. This book is also a great way for readers to be aware of their own identities and accept change.
