Critical Review of My Diary from Here To There

The story MY DIARY FROM HERE TO THERE is about a girl who immigrated from her homeland to the US because her father needed to get a new job so they could have better living conditions. She and her family tolerated many difficulties including traveling through long cold nights and getting green cards. This family worked together and helped each other during this hard time. In the end, her father finally found a job and they settled down in California where the girl found a quiet and peaceful place to think and write.

Amada’s family trusted each other and held hands along the way. The family demonstrated a hopeful and optimistic attitude which helped them face the difficulties. They worked hard and persisted to earn money and take care of themselves. Before their father was able to get their green cards, Amada’s mother needed to take care of all six children all by herself while worrying about her husband. However, she never gave up. On the other side, Amada’s father is working as a farmer in Los Angeles trying to earn enough money for him and his family as the only family provider. He needed to feed all seven mouths! The work was exhausting and hard, but he always stayed hopeful and encouraged his family by saying it won’t be long before he sees them again. They took care of each other and worked together. Amada’s family, especially the father’s attitude was always hopeful and positive during the difficult times which helped them get through some of the most burdensome and difficult phases of immigration.

Amada’s feelings about moving to the US changed from scared to excited. She was reluctant to leave her little house which she had lived in for all her life. She worried about making new friends and learning the new language. Amada was very upset about leaving her beautiful homeland and moving to a new place. But then she gradually realized that living in a new place could give her hope. She understood that her parents wanted her to get a better living quality. Amada got really excited to reach America because her father was there. She found a place where she could think and write in her diary. Amada learned to adapt in the new environment that she and her family now live in. She finally settled down and found some peace and less confusion. Amada learned how to alter herself to fit into her new surroundings.

Immigration is essential to the United States of America. Immigrants like Amada’s family are a group of people who are hardworking, resilient and able to adapt quickly in new environments. These people are uprooted from their homeland and replanted in a new place for better living conditions or better education. People all over the world came to America bringing different cultures and religions with them. This made the United States more diverse. That is why the United States is called “The melting pot”. This phrase describes when all the cultural differences are blended together forming a stronger group. It is very important for immigrants to remember who they are and keep their culture and differences alive within their hearts. Immigrants from all over the world are a valuable part of America’s population.

The story MY DIARY FROM HERE TO THERE written by Amada Irma Pérez talks about a girl and her family immigrating from Mexico to the US and overcoming difficulties along the way. One great lesson this story demonstrates is that staying hopeful and cheery would help us get through harsh and burdensome times. Amada’s feelings altered over time. She was scared and anxious at first, but then she thought moving to the US was exciting. Immigrants like Amada’s family leave their homeland and move to the United States, which contributes to America in many ways. This realistic fiction provides an interesting and vivid story. I strongly recommend elementary students to read this book.
