Critical Review of Miss Hickory

“Miss Hickory” is a children’s literature and fantasy fiction written by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. Miss Hickory has a hickory nut as a head and twigs for the torso and limbs. She lives a simplicity in her small corn cob house under the lilac bush in a human’s kitchen. In the story, many intriguing incidents occur. For instance, Miss Hickory sees the Christmas star being imprinted onto a calf's manger. Miss Hickory helps Hen Pheasant form an organization of her own. Lastly, Miss Hickory assists Bull Frog out of his predicament. Sadly, Miss Hickory's head is taken off her body and devoured by an enraged Squirrel. Unexpectedly, she can still move with her twig body without the head. In the end, Miss Hickory transforms into a flower-adorned branch on top of an apple tree. The theme of the story is about the sense of belonging.


People crave to have a place to live because individuals yearn to have a sense of belonging. This means that one always wants to find a place where one belongs to. Furthermore, the story revolves around Miss Hickory searching for a new abode. First, her original home is in a human’s kitchen. This is not a suitable place because a kitchen is never a desirable location to live. Second, Miss Hickory relocates to a new home in Robin’s nest, but she is rejected by Robin. Thirdly, she decides to go to Squirrel’s home, but the enraged Squirrel devours her head. Finally, Miss Hickory finds her new dwelling on an apple tree, where she becomes part of the tree and blossoms. Finding a residential neighborhood is essential because homes provide protection.


People assist one another during troublesome conditions. The story “Miss Hickory” gives many examples of helping in the community to build a sense of inclusion and acceptance. Miss Hickory helps others a lot even though she is a little harsh. She helps get Bull Frog unstuck from the ice while Miss Hickory is skating on the ice. Not only has she frees Bull Frog from the ice, but also she took off Bull Frog’s old clothing and shows new clothing. Furthermore, Miss Hickory helps Hen Pheasant create an organization just like Cock Pheasant’s organization of male pheasants, but instead, Hen Pheasant’s organization is going to be entirely made up of female pheasants. Hen Pheasant happily strode away. Miss Hickory not only gives help but she also receives help from others. Numerous example, Crow helps Miss Hickory find a new home, which is a nest in the trees. During difficult circumstances, people help one another.


“Miss Hickory” provides instances of how characters’ attitude change throughout the story. In the beginning of the story, Miss Hickory is usually orderly and sometimes blames other people, for example, blaming other people for their stupidity. Miss Hickory blames Squirrel for his foolishness because Squirrel always forgets where he has hidden his nuts. As the story progresses, Miss Hickory becomes more warm-hearted. She helps many animals, for example, Hen-Pheasant and Bull Frog. She helps Hen-Pheasant create an organization. Additionally, she detaches Bull Frog from the ice. In other words, Miss Hickory's improved and positive attitude makes her a valuable component of the neighborhood.

The story gives multiple details about how homes are very important to individuals because it gives them a sense of belonging. During problematic situations, people assist each other. Miss Hickory helps many animals, including Bull Frog and Hen Pheasant, from their troubles. Lastly, animal stories can reflect many issues in human society, like robbing and human attitude. “Miss Hickory” is captivating and engrossing to read. The story gives many interesting interactions between animals, even though the ending is unexpectedly gruesome.
