Critical Review of Mighty Jackie

Mighty Jackie, written by Marissa Moss is the story about a girl named Jackie trying to prove herself as good as any boy baseball player. Jackie trains hard, and even though she is as good as the boy players, (Maybe even better) people don’t seem to recognize her as a “good” baseball player, just because she is a girl, and people wrongly believe that only boys will be good at baseball. However, Jackie’s determined personality strives to prove them wrong, and she does. This book is a great example of how girl’s weren’t recognized and acknowledged back then, and a sign of how girls can do what boys can.

Hard-work always pays off in the end. A sloppy or good job won’t suffice. But, a great and amazing job can. Even though Jackie is discouraged by many people by the fact that she is a girl, she never gives up. When she trains, she puts in all her effort and all her might into what she is doing, in order to prove the people who thought she can't play baseball wrong. She practiced and practiced, ignoring those that discouraged her, only listening to those that encouraged her. A job done with hard-work is always better than one done with lousy work. Even if you are bad at doing something, as long as you try and put effort into it while you try, you are going to be good at it soon.

Girls can do anything boys can, if not better. Never underestimate a girl. They can accomplish just as much as boys can. Jackie always wanted to prove the people that thought she couldn’t wrong, and she did. She decided to show the people who thought she could not how she could. She wanted to give them a taste of how not only boys can play baseball, but girls can, too. She works hard to prove that girls CAN do anything boys can. It’s not just about how you think. It’s about how they think. Any estimation about anything or anybody can always prove to be wrong.

A female is just as high-leveled as a male. Females were really underestimated and pre-judged back then, but actually, they can do just as much as males can do. Women were not allowed to do many things back then. It was in 1826 when the first women got to go to college, and in 1920 when the first women got to vote. There is a major setback in women’s history just because people thought that they can’t or shouldn’t do something because it seems like a man’s job. If a male can vote, and a female can vote. If a male can vote, but females can’t, males shouldn’t be able to. Women can be builders and plumbers. It’s whether the people will believe in them, and whether the women believe in themselves.

Mighty Jackie by Marissa Moss is a great story that really shows how women were treated unfairly and how they fought instead of just letting it close the door to many opportunities and possibilities. Jackie thrived to change “girls can’t” into “girls can” in baseball, as many people thought that girls shouldn’t be allowed to play baseball, probably because they thought that girls were too weak, when they didn’t even have evidence to show that. This book really shows how girls shouldn't just be shunted sideways past possibilities because of their gender.
