Critical Review of Lob’s Girl

The story The Lob’s girl was written by Joan AikenIn the short story, Joan Delano Aiken MBE (4 September 1924 – 4 January 2004) was an English writer specializing in supernatural fiction and children's alternative history novels. In 1999 she was awarded an MBE for her services to children's literature Lob's Girl by Joan Aiken, a girl named Sandy and a dog named Lob formed a strong friendship that helped them get through a tragic event. Throughout the story, Sandy and Lob developed an intense friendship that turned into an inseparable bond.

Treating each other with loyalty and honesty can make an individual's popularity better. A person who is loyal and honest always can make more true friends rather than false friends and will get a higher rating from the people who are individually treated. For example, in the story, When Sandy first met Lob on the beach, she loved him very much, and Lob also liked Sandy a lot. Every time he met Sandy, he always liked to lick her face. Finally, one time when Sandy was almost hit by a car on the road, it was Lob who saved Sandy, but he was hit and killed. This example shows that Sandy and Lob are being very honest and loyal with each other, unlike Lob’s master who dislikes Lob, and finally abandoned Lob. And Lob even saved Sandy’s life in the end. Being Loyalty and honest to friends can be helped at critical moments, even saved lives.

Having a harmonious and warm family can make a person progress and grow quickly. In a harmonious and warm family, everyone is united as one. When a family member encounters difficulties, other family members will encourage and support him. This can enable people in the whole family to support each other and encourage each other to quickly grow, succeed. For example, in the story, Because Sandy’s parents are very busy, therefore, Sandy look after her brother and sister, it’s kind of tired, but when Sandy’s family went to the beach together, And from Sandy met Lob to they adopted Lob, Lob thoroughly became one of the family member of Sandy’s family, it makes Sandy become more cheerful. This example shows that Sandy’s parents are supporting the whole family to live by earning money, and Sandy is supporting the people in the family, especially the children, but it’s a little tiring for her, who is also a child, and Lob supports Sandy,  he gives Sandy motivation and encouragement. Unity in a family plus mutual support and encouragement can make a person more cheerful and positive.

Supernatural and ghosts cannot be proven scientifically, but many people still believe in their existence. In different people's opinions, ghosts and supernatural phenomena are different. Some people think that they do not exist and are just coincidences. Some people think that they exist. Some people think that ghosts are just and always guarding people. Some people think ghosts are evil and suck the life out of humans. For instance, in the story, after Lob got crashed by the car to save Sandy, Lob didn’t die. Instead, Lob became a ghost and accompanied and guarded Sandy in another form. Even Sandy can’t see Lob, but she can feel Lob still exists. This example proves that in Sandy’s opinion, she believes that ghosts exist, and they are just, which protect people.  This may also be an illusion caused by Sandy missing Lob too much. Whether ghosts and paranormal phenomena exist or not just depends on whether people believe it or not. There is no precise definition.

In conclusion, the novel Lob’s Girl explores Being loyal and honest to friends and family members is a very important thing which can make people trust individuals more. Furthermore, the story also tells us that an individual who has a harmonious and warm family can make individuals get more support and encouragement from other family members, this will help individuals be mature and successful quicker. Additionally, there is no precise definition of the existence of ghosts and supernatural phenomena. They cannot be explained by science, but they often appear all over the world. However, their existence still depends on whether people believe in them.
