In the novel “It's Like This, Cat” written by Emily Cheney Neville, Dave Mitchell (a 14-year-old boy) receives a cat from Kate’s house because his father wants a dog. Dave always fights with his father about things his own way, just like Cat, his cat. Because of Cat, he met and befriended many people, like Hilda, Tom and Mary, who became supportive friends. It was because of Cat’s adventurous features that Dave had found his friends. Additionally, Cat persuades Dave to have adventures because of his attitude toward going outside. It allows him to understand family relationships and what they mean to him- especially with his relationship with Pop, his father. For Cat's great influence towards Dave and the family, they and their friends celebrate Cat together at Dave’s house.
It doesn’t matter what form someone takes, they can still bring an important influence. Even minor beings can be important with relationships, friendships and family understanding. Cat brought Dave to meet and befriend new people, have adventures and mostly, understand Pop, his father. Dave meets Mary, Hilda and Tom because of Cat, and they go on adventures to Coney Island. Dave always wants to argue and make his own way instead of obeying his father on things he doesn’t agree with. However, Cat’s attitude contrasts with Pop’s will for a dog, so Dave and Pop start to understand each other more, Pop even supporting Dave’s friends like Kate and Tom. Cat’s great influence helps Dave understand relationships with Pop and his friends as never before. Cat brought an understanding of relationships, family understanding and friendship to Dave.
Animals and humans have similar characteristics and features that can be understood together. The title “It’s Like This, Cat” includes Cat in it because of his features and similarities with the main character, Dave. Cat always want to go outside and explore, fighting when he wants to and being independent; similar to Dave, except in a human way. Humanity and animals have anxiety, stress, independence and vulnerability. Cat and Dave both want to stand up for themselves, have a fear of strangers, fear worsened circumstances and are vulnerable to fights even though they want to be independent. Cat fights with other cats but always returns home because of being vulnerable to others and having injuries. Dave has the same experience. Having Cat with similar characteristics helps Dave understand his features and relationships. Cat is posed in the title; he has similar features similar to Dave that help Dave understand himself and others.
Growing up relates to family insurance and compassion for others and relationships. To succeed maturity means to understand the ways of growing up, family relationships, compassion and friends; being grown up. Not only does it mean reaching the stage of being an adult, but also what it takes to reach it. Dave grows up to understand his father and his ways and has compassion for him. In the end, they agreed that having Cat was educational; they were more understanding with each other. He also excels at having friendships with Tom, Mary and Hilda. When Tom grows up, he understands others and builds a strong relationship with Hilda, such that he wants to marry her. Tom also comes back to care about his father, even though he had been unwelcoming and cruel to him. Growing up doesn’t only mean being an adult in age, size and success; it also means what it takes to be grown up and the experience. To grow up includes family compassion, friendships, being grown up and having bonds with others.
The novel “It’s Like This, Cat”, Dave finds Cat and learns a lot growing up with him. He understands growing up, his features and how to adapt to them, and he builds many relationships with Cat. Although Pop doesn’t think it is educational, Cat has a big influence on Dave’s life. Despite his form and his comments, he proves to be educational and helps Dave have friendships and understand his father. Additionally, Cat has similar characteristics to Dave, helping him to understand his features and how he can adapt to them. Cat is posed in the title because he is the one who helps Dave and helps him understand himself and others. During Dave’s time growing up, he learns a lot about Pop with Cat, his relations and what it takes to grow up to mature, not only in size and form but the experience during his time growing up.
