Critical Review of Far from the Madding Crowd

Far from the Madding Crowd was written by Thomas Hardy about the love life of a girl called Bathsheba. This story revolves around the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm and becomes the owner of a large estate called Weatherbury. As a young and attractive woman, Bathsheba finds herself at the center of attention. Gabriel Oak, a kind-hearted and hardworking shepherd, falls in love with Bathsheba at first sight. After Gabriel loses his own farm, he becomes a shepherd on Bathsheba's estate and their relationship suffers. In spite of his love for Bathsheba, Gabriel remains loyal and devoted to her. After Bathsheba sends him a Valentine's Day card, William Boldwood, a wealthy and middle-aged bachelor, falls in love with her. In the process, Boldwood becomes increasingly possessive and jealous of Bathsheba. Bathsheba, however, does not reciprocate his feelings, resulting in disaster. Sergeant Francis Troy, the third suitor, wins Bathsheba over with his charm and good looks. Despite warnings from others, Bathsheba falls in love with Troy and marries him, only to discover he is reckless and irresponsible. Bathsheba suffers tragic consequences from Troy's infidelity.

In most Victorian Literature, people are separated into social classes which are rich, middle and poor. The characters from Far from the Madding Crowd have also been separated into different social classes, although there have been changes during the story. The main character, Bathsheba, is from a middle class background and eventually moves up to the upper class. However, other characters experience a decline in their social class. Gabriel Oak, for example, goes from a wealthy landowner to a poor shepherd, then finally into the upper class by marrying Bathsheba at the end. This serves to emphasize the fluidity of social class and how one's fortunes can quickly change as a result of circumstance, luck, and hard work. It also highlights how those from the upper classes often have a much easier time of returning to their previous social standing, as compared to those from the lower classes. One of the easiest ways to be a social climber is by marriage, as Gabriel has done, he has married to one of the upper class which made him an upper class too. Social classes are unstable as well as a way of separating people, although people are able to have friends from different social classes.

Marriage, an important aspect of life, it is optional and it is mainly for happiness and love. Many people get married for love and happiness, although there are also people that get marriage for contract or financial purposes. It is also one of the quickest and easiest way to be a social climber, many people can become social climbers by getting married to one that is from a higher class than them. In Far from the Madding crowd, we see that Gabriel became a social climber at the end of the story simply by marring Bathsheba. By marrying Bathsheba, Gabriel was able to gain access to her wealth and social status as a well-known and respected landowner in the area. The marriage allowed him to become part of the upper class and gain the respect of those in the higher echelons of society. His marriage allowed him to gain financial and social stability, and the respect of his peers. Gabriel was able to achieve his desired status in society, and his ambition was ultimately fulfilled.

By talking about the past and how badly they treated women, it is one of the ways we can change our future to become better, to become more equitable. Women and men are all humans, and they should be able to have the same rights. In far from the madding crowd the role of women wasn’t necessarily the same as mens. By understanding the past and the mistakes we have made, we can better understand the current situation and make sure we don't make the same mistakes in the future. It is especially important to talk about the past when it comes to issues of gender equality, as it is one of the most pervasive and long-standing issues in our society. Talking about the past helps to create awareness and understanding, which can lead to meaningful and lasting change in the present and future.
