Critical Review of Don Quixote - “A Man with an Ideal Dream”

The protagonist of Don Quixote's novel was originally called Alonso Jihada, who was a native. He was fascinated by the knight novels that swept the society at that time, and he also wanted to follow the example of knight errands. He found a pair of shabby armor from the antiques handed down by his family. He named himself Don Quixote de Ramancha. He also found a servant Sangqiu and a milking girl from a neighboring village, named Dulcinia, as his sweetheart who worked for him all his life. Then ride a thin horse and run away from home. Don Quixote also acted according to the strange ideas in his mind. He regarded the windmill as a giant, the sheep as an enemy, the slave as a victim of the knight, and the wine bag as a giant's head. He cut and killed indiscriminately and did many absurd things. His actions not only benefited people, but also suffered from beating. After he got home for the last time, he was bedridden and finally realized it. He made a will that if the niece, the only heir, married a knight, her inheritance would be revoked.

At the beginning of reading Don Quixote, I simply thought it was a funny comedy. The crazy "courage" of the hero makes him look like a nervous person in the eyes of others. However, on reflection, Don Quixote also has the constitution of a normal person. The reason why he has different behaviors from ordinary people must be that he has some quality that normal people do not have. I define it as dream. It is a quality of desperation for dreams, even if it is regarded as a joke. He was always kind and just in the process of realization. He never forgot his original intention and always wanted to be a chivalrous knight. At this moment, there are few people like Don Quixote who are brave and kind enough to stand up for their dreams. When we were young, we all promised to be knights and save the world. Most of us were great men in thought. How many people could turn their daydreams into reality like Don Quixote. Most of us were afraid of being laughed at. It's not funny to have dreams. It's funny to dare to think instead of doing. Don Quixote's simplicity is ridiculous and respectable.

In the dark and decadent society at that time, the author created for us a Don Quixote who was "not afraid of violence, not afraid of losing his life" and determined to wipe out the injustice of the world. The protagonist in the novel lives in the rising period of capitalism, full of lofty idealistic spirit, and his total fantasy is to eliminate all social inequalities, which has caused a conflict with the objective reality, which is both comic and tragic. This Don Quixote who made mistakes of the times wanted to recover his chivalry in real life, so he became an exaggerated, funny and comic character. However, in various occasions, the author repeatedly highlighted his dedication to eradicating human evils, thus showing the noble quality of his character, that is, he was willing to sacrifice his own life for the society in order to pursue justice and ideals without putting himself in danger. Therefore, unlike the comedic role of a simple civil servant's house, he is also a character with tragic factors and a "madman" with lofty spiritual realm.

Don Quixote is a just fighter. He is indomitable, brave and courageous. He was deeply disgusted with the rapists and the dark society, and tried to revitalize the chivalry through his own chivalry. However, contrary to his wishes, chivalry had been eliminated by the times. In addition, he was poisoned by chivalry novels, became a blind man, and integrated fantasy with reality. He regarded windmills as giants, sheep as armies, and hairdresser's gold basin as helmets. Therefore, everyone thought he was crazy. Especially in the chapter of staying in the hotel, he was fooled around by others, but he was totally unaware. After reading this, I can't help feeling sad for Don Quixote. Moreover, he is a pure idealist. He hopes to build a highly free new society. Unfortunately, his ideal is surreal, superior to reality and the law. Driven by this, he made such crazy moves as injuring the guards who escorted the prisoners and releasing the king's prisoners. He hoped that prisoners would be free, but he did not know that prisoners had no right to freedom. So his ideal could not be realized.

The chivalry pursued by Don Quixote is a kind of spirit of chivalry, justice and fearlessness of power. He can protect the weak and uphold justice, so that he can gain some prestige, be respected and have a sense of light. In this process of chivalry, even if you sacrifice yourself, you will not be afraid of bleeding and getting hurt. He was disappointed in the indifference of the society and stuck to his belief in saving the world. "I am a knight. As long as God allows me, I will be a knight until I die. Each person has different aspirations: some are ambitious, some are servile, some are deceitful, some are religious; I follow the guidance of my fate and follow the dangerous path of a ranger. I do this business not for money, but for reputation." He said these words forcefully and forcefully. On the other side of his foolishness, he persevered and looked forward to the future.
