Critical Essay of Sense and Sensibility - Marianne's Love Theory

"Sense and Sensibility" is an excellent novel by Jane Austen. The story included Marianne’s love story which is basically all about finding a perfect partner who she will be passionate for.  She believes her feelings towards a person which can protect her from judging people by their wealth and social position but also led her to fall for the fake Willoughby who hid his true inside to seem charming. This tricked Marianne very easily. You might think that Willoughby got what he wanted. Instead of living peacefully, he betrays her, leaving her heartbroken and realizing there's more to love than just her feelings and emotions. Throughout the story, Marianne learns that a good relationship needs a mix of both intense feelings and also sensible thinking. In the end, she finds happiness with someone who's kind, reliable, and actually cares about her, even if they don't shower her with dramatic emotions. The story basically teaches us that love is great, but don't let your emotions blind you to what's real.

For some people, emotions and passion can be the main reason for love. People can base love on money and social status which can be harmful. Loving just because of how you fit is true love although your life might be hard in the future. People can feel happy from having money to being with someone they love. Living a happy life should be the ultimate goal when picking a suitable partner. People can get strong emotions when seeing people they love and that feeling is right most of the time. Love is supposed to happen following your heart so don’t be blinded by wealth and position in society and find the right person for you. In the story, Marianne had lots of passion for Willoughby which can be a great goal for her. She did get too fast in the relationship and missed lots of important things, but she did enjoy the path although the ending wasn’t very good. It is good to listen to your heart but having sense and thinking about things logically is also important. Not seeing people thoroughly can lead to bad consequences. Following your hearts will give you a better future but also don’t do it blindly.

Believing in your heart and feelings can lead to great results but purely relying on them can be dangerous. True feelings for eachother is the center of love and that choosing a suitable partner who you will be passionate for can be one of the most important choices to decide in life. Your heart can lead you to a good choice, but still being sensible is the main idea to not be tricked and find the best partners for you. Sensibility can be a hard thing to keep when facing a partner who has a wonderful outside. Your heart might decide you are the perfect match, but people can always hide their true selves so you have to be always careful. In the story, Marianne was only listening to her heart and fell into Willoughby’s trap while Elinor stayed sensible and dodged the problems. Your feelings for a person can be trustworthy, but sometimes, when evil people use their fake identities, you can be easily deceived. Do not get bonded by the wealth and social status of people, but also don’t get overwhelmed by the strong feeling of love. Sensibility can balance out the strong love and a clear mind. It is important to know to use the sense in your brain and control when you are fallen into deep love or losing your mind over something.

Societal expectations are the unwritten rules and norms that guide behavior within a community. They include everything from acceptable clothing styles to career paths, and even how we express love and relationships. Conforming to these expectations can bring stability, belonging, and acceptance. You might land the "right" job, find partners within approved circles, and navigate social situations smoothly. However, defying societal expectations can also be rewarding. It allows you to pursue your passions, challenge unfair or unfriendly norms, and follow your own unique path. In the story, Marianne learned the balance of the acceptance and denial of societal expectations the hard way. Her strong disregard for societal expectations led to heartbreak, while blindly conforming wouldn't have brought her true happiness. Finding the sweet spot between societal expectations and your own feelings can allow you to get a better future within your community. Not following societal norms can lead you to special results, both good and bad. Thinking outside the box can be a risk but the rewards can be very big. Following the expectations can be the safer choice because of how these hidden rules are made by the experience people gathered over time. Following these rules is more beneficial for most people but for those who like exploring and taking risks, it is also fine to challenge those expectations. These hidden rules all have two sides, they can help you find the good paths and can also hide those better ones, so it is important to find the middle ground of following and denying these societal expectations to find the best paths to walk on.

In conclusion, Marianne’s ridiculously strong feelings for love teaches us that passion alone isn't enough for true happiness. Like societal expectations, it offers both security and potential pitfalls. True happiness, like Marianne's, lies in the "sweet spot" between heart and sensibility, showing how when individuality is kept while respecting wisdom gained through shared experiences is the best position to be in. So listen to your emotions, but don't be blinded by them. The best paths often lie where passion and reason join together.
