Comparison of The Medicine Bag & TA NA E KA

The stories The Medicine Bag and Ta Na E Ka by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve and Mary Whitebird talk about the different traditions they have and what the people do in hard cultural times. In The Medicine Bag Martin knows that it is time for him to get the medicine bag. He knows beforehand what the medicine bag looks like. He described the bag as dirty and bad. However, when he is getting the bag he understands why the bag looks bad. He also keeps it because he knows how important it is to his grandfather. He ends up liking part of his culture and he likes Grandpa more than he had ever had. In Ta Na E Ka Mary has to stay alive for 5 days, but she is supposed to only eat berries and not visit their family. However, instead of facing the trial, she uses the money to buy things like food. She ends up getting away with it because she did the flaws of the rules of the trial. This part is good because she found a flaw in the rules. If no one found out then someone else would find it and Mary might have died. In this essay, we will talk about heritage, things that make their culture unique, and the different solutions.

The different solutions of the stories are interesting because The two main characters of TA NA E KA and The Medicine Bag have unique ways of doing things when they have different heritage problems and different solutions. One of the children is going around the problem and not fixing the problem. The other one did not like it at first but ended up facing and being proud of his heritage. In Ta Na E Ka Mary is given a test for Kaws but not an ordinary test she is given a survival test where if she cannot survive for 5 days then she will die. However, instead of facing it and doing what his cousin did she cheated and she used the money for food. Instead of what she did she should have done is that she should accept that this is her tradition and it might be more fun than she thought, but she did not find out she cheated her way around. In the story, The Medicine Bag Martin is braver when he hears that he is supposed to get the medicine bag. He does not skip it. He accepts it and is happy that he is part of his culture. I think that what he did is the right thing to do because he did not cut corners or go around he faced it and ended up happy to be part of his heritage. This tells us that we should face not only our religion but everything. When you are done you may feel a lot better.

The things that make their culture unique are different and this is what makes every culture fun the fun things are treasure symbols of their culture. The treasure symbol of Ta Na E Ka is the survival test for 5 days. The treasure symbol of the medicine bag is the Medicine Bag. In Ta Na E Ka the treasure symbol is that the Kaw tribe people when they reach 11 years old have to go through a trial to see if they can be a man or a lady. If they died they were not worth weeping over. The symbol of the Kaw might seem weird because if they have to choose, parents will not send their children out when they are 11 years old. They do this because they want to make sure that all people are safe. However, they do this in the Kaw to make sure they all are good warriors. In the story, The Medicine Bag the treasure symbol of the medicine bag is that when you receive it. It is supposed to keep you from illness. This medicine bag is a tradition that is passed on and on. The true meaning of the Medicine bag is that they want to make sure that anyone who has it will not be ill. This means that fewer people will die which is good. The true meaning of the treasure symbols of your tradition is more than what you see on the outside it has deeper meanings.

The different heritage is different because different people believe different things some people pray to Jesus some to Budda and some do not believe in goods. The traditions from the old times are sometimes used because they believe that if we do it we will have good luck. For example a good luck charm. The tradition they have in Ta Na E Ka is that they still eat grasshoppers and berries for a trial of 5 days without help from their parents. However, the main character, Mary did what modern people at the time would do, eat hamburgers and milkshakes. Mary instead of facing the test goes around the heritage of the Kaw. The reason she went around it was because she was scared of dying. She should have done it properly and made her family proud. The tradition in The Medicine Bag is that a medicine bag is passed on from Martin's grandfather to Martin. Not any ordinary bag a bag that is supposed to stop illness. Instead of running around the heritage. he accepts his heritage and is proud to be part of his culture. He accepts and does what his grandpa does with the bag. Heritage will be more fun if you face it then when you are done you will feel a lot more accomplished. This is because you have a feeling of accomplishment.

In this essay, we talked about heritage, things that make their culture unique, and the different solutions. Heritage is very important and not to be taken as a bad thing that it is taking up your time. It has a deeper meaning like in The Medicine Bag the medicine bag has the meaning that the bag should save you from death for a while and after a few years it is time for that male person to pass it down to their eldest son or their eldest grandson. In Ta Na E Ka the things that look like it is a survival test to make sure that the Kaw are all good warriors. It means cherishing nature because most of the time we are stuck in front of screens or inside. We do not have much time to go outside and have some fun. Other than sports we are usually at our home. Some sports are still inside. We do not spend nearly as much time outside to have some fun. If the true meaning of Ta Na E Ka has different meanings like that to make sure that everyone is strong enough to protect themselves from their culture keeps going on and on. Sometimes we need to figure out the true meanings of our cultures or anything.
