The novel “Charlotte’s Web”, written by E.B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams talks about Wilbur, a runt pig’s life. It is morning and Mr. Arable holds an ax to kill Wilbur because he is a runt pig. Fern stops him. Later, she gets the runt pig and she takes good care of it. When Wilbur is big enough, he is sold to Mr. Zuckermans. The barn is very big and old and it smells like hay. One day an old sheep tells Wilbur that he is going to die on Christmas. Charlotte says she is going to save Wilbur. An idea comes to Charlotte’s mind. The way to save Wilbur is to fool the Zuckermans. Charlotte weaves some words in the middle of her web, “SOME PIG”, “TERRIFIC”, “RADIANT”, and “HUMBLE”. Mr. Zuckermans thinks Wilbur is very special so he takes him to the fair. Wilber wins award and Mr. Zuckermans does not kill him. At the end, Charlotte made an egg sack and died. Wilbur then takes good care of Charlotte’s children and grandchildren and becomes good friends with them.
Friendship is one of the most important relationships that you need during your whole life.
Friendships are the connections between two or more people who care about each other, share thoughts, and give support when they need it. When Wilbur hears that he is going to be killed, he feels very sad and panic. Charlotte stands up, saying “You should not die.”. She comes up with an idea: She weaves the words on her web, including “SOME PIG”, “TERRIFIC”, “RADIANT”, and “HUMBLE”, to trick the Zuckermans, so they think Wilbur is very special and they will not kill him. Wilbur is saved by Charlotte. Everyone has friends to chat and play with, and they might think they are good friends. But true friends are the people who are willing to give their hands to you, stand up for you, help you solve the problem, and support you with their warm hearts when you are in a difficult situation. True friends will not give up on their friends or walk away when they need help. Instead, they will stay next to their friends and help them without asking for any payback.
Everyone should be treated fairly no matter what his appearance looks like. Fairness means the quality of treating people, animals, and everything the same or in a right or reasonable way. When Mr. Arable is going to kill Wilbur with an ax, Fern stops him and tries to pull the ax out of her father’s hands. Fern cries and asks “If I had been small at birth, would you have killed me?”. Fern thinks that it is not fair for Mr. Arable to kill Wilbur just because he is small. Mr. Arable listens to Fern and decides not to kill Wilbur. It is unfair to kill animals just because their appearance is different from the others. After all, this tiny animal still has its life and he has the right to live. No one can decide if this tiny animal will live or die. Who knows if this tiny animal could be very special in the future, like Wilbur or help them do something? People should be treated equally, not to be judged by their appearances.
Life cycle continues when the old life dies and the new life starts. A life cycle means life continuing from generation to generation. Charlotte is a spider so her life is very short. After Charlotte lays the eggs, she dies naturally. Wilbur is sad for the death of his good friend, but Charlotte leaves her babies. The baby spiders means a new life cycle and they become good friends with Wilbur. Every time Wilbur sees baby spiders, he thinks of Charlotte and what she has done for him. It is very natural that Charlotte dies because of her life span, but that doesn’t mean the life ends forever. Charlotte still has her children, grandchildren, and many other children. Wilbur doesn’t forget Charlotte and all the things she has done for him. Wilbur puts Charlotte in his heart. When Wilbur sees Charlotte’s babies, he would think of Charlotte. This makes him want to take good care of Charlotte’s babies because his love and appreciation for Charlotte will not stop. Even though life ends because of the life cycle, love still exists and continues in another way.
This novel, “Charlotte’s Web”, is a warming and engaging book to read. It teaches me three really important things, including friendship, fairness, and life cycle. First, a true friend is not just someone who chats or plays with you. True friends will listen to you, share thoughts with you, and provide help when you have a problem. Next, everyone should be treated equally. Don’t judge people by their appearances. Lastly, I understand what the life cycle is. Life cycle means life continues from generation to generation. Although one’s life may end at some point because of the life span, love and feelings will go on.
