Character Review of The King of Mazy May

The King of Mazy May, written by Jack London, is about a man named Walt Masters, who is a son of a respected, kind man, set in the cold of Klondike in Yukon, Canada. When his father is away prospecting for quartz up the river, Walt is tasked with the responsibility of making sure that his father’s claim, a section for gold prospecting marked by posts, is safe from stampeders and also the neighboring claim, of Loren Hall, who is away getting his claim verified in Dawson. However, soon Walt spies a large group, and suspects they are professional stampeders, bent on jumping all the claims they can get. His suspicions are confirmed when they take out a list of the unconfirmed claims and find Loren Hall’s. They pan for a bit of gold and find loads. Walt, realizing that Loren has struck it rich, decides to try to save the claim and rides off with the stampeders’ dogs. A mighty chase ensues, but Walt’s bravery and persistence pays off, saving Loren and becoming known as the King of Mazy May. The King of Mazy May is a touching story on the power of bravery and how helping others with persistence works.

Living in nature and being different from others can allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the world and allow us to become more knowledgeable. When we are in tune with nature, we can learn about animals and plants. Knowing important information on flora and fauna gives us an ability others don’t have. Inside of The King of Mazy May, Walt knew that the true leader of the pack needed to take the lead in order for him to outpace his pursuers, and otherwise, if he hadn’t known this, he would have been caught. When the current, weaker dog died, he quickly knew to change the leads and let the leader run in front. This gave him the ability to outrun the stampeders and help him save Loren Hall’s claim. Without his knowledge of the dogs, he wouldn’t have managed to figure out the importance of having the right dog in front. When we know important, seemingly small details, they can add up and make all of the difference. Being different is being special, and everyone is unique. By becoming in harmony with nature we can attempt to gain useful and valuable skills for later in life.

Determination and persistence are both useful traits for helping others and creating benefits for ourselves. When we don’t give up, we can continue working and try harder. Doing so gives us the ability to succeed when we continue trying and only stop once we’ve completed our goal or our task. Inside of The King of Mazy May, Walt could have given up and let the stampeders take Loren Hall’s claim, as his own father’s claim was already safe. However, he chose to keep on going and narrowly avoided the stampeders at every step of the way. Even when the stampeders were shooting at him and he could have easily died, he didn’t stop and chose to keep on trying to warn Loren Hall and help him verify his claim before the stampeders could. The only chance Loren had of keeping his fortune from the claim would be from Walt saving him using his persistence and determination. Walt successfully did so, showing the importance of continuing on. When we try hard enough, we can do nearly anything and it will be extremely beneficial towards everyone including ourselves as long as we just try. We have to try to be determined and persistent in order to allow ourselves to reach our goals and finish what we’ve started.

Sometimes, when incidents befall us, they can actually be blessings in disguise that can be extremely beneficial to us. Small things could happen that seem to be completely negative, but it can actually be beneficial to us in other ways that allow us to pull ahead of the rest. Inside of The King of Mazy May, the dogs were pulling Walt along to reach Dawson, but they weren’t going quickly enough. The reason for this was because of how the lead dog wasn’t the right leader of the pack, and this slowed Walt down immensely. However, once the stampeders started trying to hurt them, the current, inferior lead dog was shot and died. Walt took advantage of this and realized that this was actually something that could be beneficial and used to his advantage, and he quickly let the true lead dog start leading the pack and gave the rest of the dogs a relief. Walt knew that sometimes, bad things can be revealed to be positive benefits. It’s important to acknowledge that not everything that happens to us should be taken at face value, in order to create better benefits and help multiple people. Getting blessings in disguise can be really helpful in getting us back on our feet and giving us a lead towards the competition.

The King of Mazy May is a fantastic story that teaches us the incredibly important themes of how knowing about nature and the environment can help us throughout life, how continuing something and being persistent gives us a better chance and an improved opportunity for success, and finally how something that may seem negative and an obvious loss can actually be revealed to be a benefit and something helpful. Knowing about the world gives us useful knowledge that we can apply in order to gain an advantage over our competitors, and when we try extremely hard to succeed, this forces us to succeed since we won’t give up. Also, taking things at face value isn’t always the right strategy because issues that seem horrible could also reveal beneficial subjects and helpful ideas for others. The King of Mazy May teaches us all of these helpful and amazing themes that are extremely useful in life, and the main character Walt Masters manages to learn all of them and uses them to do good in his life.
