Character Analysis of Because of Winn-Dixie - Who Impresses Me Most

<<Because of Winn Dixie>> is written by Kate dicamllo. It talks about a 10-year-old girl named India Opal Buloni who has just moved to a trailer park in the small town of Naomi, Florida, with her father, known as the Preacher because he preaches at the local church. Her mother abandoned them when Opal was three. She describes the Preacher as a turtle, always sticking his head into his shell. The preacher's father impresses me the most. Now, I found that the preacher is having some problems, let's talk about them.

Problem one is that the preacher needs communication with his daughter. Opal because the preacher didn’t talk about why mom leaves or others, this causes Opal to not know the truth and feels emotionally neglected. In the story, Opal can’t experience the sadness of Dad, knowing her Dad so Opal blames her Dad and describes her Dad as “a man who always had his head tucked inside a turtle shell”. In my life, Dad cared about me, discussed some questions with me, and never did anything bad for Mom. A family should be together, and have communication between them.

The second problem is that the preacher was stubborn.  Usually, most people would give up hoping that their wife would return, but the preacher carried on believing.  In the story, Opal’s Mom goes away, but the preacher still believes that she will return. Our lives do not only have the past and the present but also the future. Don’t become a stubborn person, avoid focusing on the present, and do your best to be a person who looks forward.

The last problem of the preacher is not knowing how to tell love. Sometimes, love needs to be told or shown. In the story’s beginning, the preacher just says good night to his daughter. In the end, the preacher kisses Opal and says goodnight, this means that the preacher put the love in his heart, and now shows it out. Because of Winn Dixie, the preacher becomes a person that shows his love, but not only puts love in his heart. Love needs to be shown, to be told, the people being loved need to feel it.

In conclusion, this is an amazing and warm story. Opal’s father is a character in the story who has many problems but deeply impressed me. He has many differences in the story’s beginning and end. From a man who doesn’t know how to communicate with his daughter and doesn’t show his love transforms into a loving and supportive father, who could show his love to his daughter. These changes tell me the importance of communication and love. This book is wonderful, and I hope you can read it with your family and friends one day.
