Change the World or Myself?

The world we live in is imperfect, and we strive to improve it. We can help people, communities, and the environment in different ways, such as volunteering, community service, or donating food to those in need, but it really depends on when we decide to actually make a change. Whether it means taking action immediately or waiting for the right moment, we all want to make a change somehow. It could mean a small change, or a big change, but after our kind actions, something in this world will have changed. Every person is able to make a change, but it really depends on their choices. Whether they want to make a change to this planet as soon as possible, or if they want to take their time on the subject, they will eventually have an impact in this world. I believe that it’s not about the timing. Honestly, it’s quite the opposite. I believe that experience is more important when it comes to making a change. What this means is that if we were to change the world or to change ourselves first, I would pick to change ourselves first. What this means is that we would have to be more experienced in subjects such as pollution, and we would be smarter and kinder people before we plan to take action.

Improving ourselves can actually help us make a bigger impact on the planet, because we will have more knowledge on what we are trying to change. Changing something doesn’t mean just taking action immediately. If we want to actually make an impact, we must know what we’re doing. Improving ourselves doesn’t necessarily mean improving our personalities. It could also mean improving our knowledge, or even improving our physical health, like Kimmy Weeks, who only accomplished a lot after he recovered from cholera. We can also gain inspiration to change the world even more, if we have more preparation. Statistics show that around 14% of major changes are made by people who have gone through self-improvement and want to motivate people around them. Around 41% of major changes were made by either researchers or people who have done thorough research and have experience with a certain subject, such as pollution. Although these numbers may seem small, together, they equal more than half of all the major changes in the world. Although many people may have gotten lucky when they made a change, even if they don’t know anything about a certain subject, this won’t be the case for everyone.

One thing that I believe we should stand by is “Let everything happen naturally, never force it”. What this means is not necessarily how it sounds. It’s another way of telling us to take our time, because the quality of our impact is much more important than when we do it. Even if it takes months for us to successfully launch our ‘change’, then so be it. If it takes just a while longer for the change to be more impactful and successful, I believe we should risk it. There is a 59% chance of someone unprepared to make a bad decision, according to recent news articles. Making a good decision is one thing, but we also have to consider how big our impact will be. If we can make a small impact, why can’t we make a big one? With just a bit of self-improvement and extra planning, we can get there. People may argue “quality over quantity”. However, even if we didn’t focus on how big the impact is, we still need to improve ourselves and to plan further for a better-quality change. If we want to make a good impact, it is best to improve ourselves first.

As noble as it seems, changing the ‘world’ might just mean our personal worlds. Before anything in our lives is us. John C. Maxwell once said; “Most people want to change the world, but the world they need to change first is the one inside themselves.” What he wanted to say is that the first step to changing the world is to change ourselves. It is many people’s ambition to make an impact on our planet, and although our planet may be facing many troubles, we don’t have to all contribute so much to make our world better. What I suggest is that we focus on ourselves, and when there is something like junk on the floor, we can simply pick it up and throw it. Although it may not seem like a big difference, it could be saving the life of a sea creature. This won’t necessarily be in the way of our self-improvement. We should focus on being better at whatever it is, rather than impulsively thinking about changing the world. According to a recent survey, around 89% of people have a higher impulse to do greater things after they have become a better version of themselves. If we want to change the world, we must first take small steps and change ourselves. If we aren’t satisfied with what we, as humans, already are, then I believe we should change that before having any thoughts of making a difference in this world.

Changing the world is a big step to take, which is why it is much better to start by improving ourselves. If there is one thing in life that we must accomplish is to be satisfied with who we are, as people. Think of it like this; a girl is offered the chance to make an impact on the world right now, or to wait 12 years and maybe not get this opportunity. Of course most people would think that the most obvious choice is to change the world right now. However, as I have explained, they are missing a huge detail. The girl has yet to mature, and much to learn, and in 12 years, she will be much more experienced. Even if she may never get this opportunity again, there will be many more in which she can excel because she had 12 years to prepare for it. Another example is us, as students. In elementary school, we are taught multiplication and division. In high school, we are taught algebra and more difficult concepts. If we decide one day to suddenly change the world, it’s like going from kindergarten straight to high school. We need time. We have to improve ourselves, just like going through elementary school and middle school. Although we may want to change the world one day, it is essential to improve ourselves first, which is why I strongly believe that we should improve ourselves before doing anything irrational.
