Have you ever wondered can trees keep the air clean? In Houston, Texas, there is a forest beside the Texas Gulf Coast but because settlers wanted to make more communities for people to live in, people cut down the trees in the forest for more land. Even though it benefited us, it made the forest mostly disappear from the land. This causes deforestation and urban sprawl. It also caused more pollution in the cities. This is the reason why Dow Chemical and Nature Conservancy started to do something to make the environment better. They decided to plant trees. Leaves and Canopies can capture most of the pollutants and the pollution in the air. But this had a bad beginning and it cost $10 million, so they figured out how to use scrubbers. Scrubber’s cost and growing tree cost is almost the same.
There are some advantages about trees and scrubbers. The tree’s advantage is that reforestation can produce better air quality for people and animals to breathe. It can make you feel better after you breathe fresh air. Also, when the pollutants touch the leaves or canopies of the trees, it would naturally capture it which turns it to new fresh air. The tree with more leaves can capture more of the pollutants. The advantages of scrubbers are that they can work with trees to make the machines or equipment that makes them cheaper and it would be more sufficient to capture the pollutants in the air. Coving these two friends will be better to get rid of pollutants faster and quicker.
There are also some disadvantages for both trees and scrubbers. For trees, the disadvantages are since they are living things it could spread diseases, drought, fire and other threats like what humans and animals can do. This causes it to have the probability or chance to fail this project and cannot cost the money and all the effort they put in these trees. Imagine failing a project that you prepared for a long time, wouldn’t you be frustrated. The disadvantages for scrubbers are they are too expensive to use. If people are using these equipment to clear the pollutants, it would cost very much money. The machines must work with the trees or other objects to make sure they would use cheaper equipment and will not cost too much.
In my opinion, growing trees to reduce pollution is better than scrubbers. It is more natural for growing trees than just putting a machine in the forest and capturing pollutants. Even though there is a risk to destroy the whole forest by fire or spread diseases, this is what always happens in nature, every tree is living, so that means that there could be drought, fire and diseases everywhere at any time on the earth. People cut down trees before to get more land and make communities. People before us took land that belongs to nature and now we can give it back to nature and we are not going to give back machines that capture pollutants.
In conclusion, there are advantages and disadvantages to trees and scrubbers. The advantages of trees are they capture the pollutants in the air faster. The disadvantages of trees are natural disasters like wildfires. The advantages of scrubbers are it can work with trees to be more sufficient and disadvantages are it is too expensive. My opinion is that trees are better because they belong in the nature and machines don’t.
