Can Cell Phones be Addictive?

Ever since the cell phone was created in 1973, people had been so excited to be able to message people and to call people without having to use one of those huge telephones, or having to send everything by mail, on paper. They would soon realize the consequences. Ever since then, many different shops had opened up, making cell phones, like Apple and Samsung. Recent studies show that the more we are on our cell phones each day, the more likely we are to become addicted. But first, we must understand what it means to be addicted. This would mean that we would not be able to get off our phones, and think of our phones as one of the main sources for happiness. Being addicted is unhealthy, and slowly, we will not socialize as much, which is very bad for our social lives. It is okay to spend time on our phones for educational purposes, but sometimes, people would start procrastinating even more with their phones, doing useless things like scrolling through TikTok. Through many articles, we have learned different things and different viewpoints on whether we can actually be addicted to cell phones, but based on most articles that I have read, I believe that yes, cell phones can indeed be addictive.

Being addicted to something has its side effects, and we can begin to notice them early on, which are signs of addiction. Signs of addiction can appear even before we have been addicted, and when we notice them, it’s time to take a break from our cell phones. Why cell phones attract people so much is that we can take it anywhere, it’s basically everything we need with us on one tiny screen. If we want food, we can order takeout. We want to read, there are online books! The point is, many people will start being addicted without knowing it. One sign that we are becoming addicted to our phones is when we start feeling more sleepy in the morning, due to lack of sleep. Why? Because we were up watching the latest videos on YouTube. It was never really ‘just a communication device’. This can actually negatively impact our grades at school, and can be bad for our health. Another sign is when we cannot help but feel completely attached to our screen devices, which actually weakens our social lives. Not only that, but when we are taken away from these cell phones, we will feel sadness and cannot live without it. People may argue that it’s for educational purposes, but many phone addicts will convince themselves that they aren’t doing anything wrong using this exact sentence.

Cell phones were designed to be addictive, with every game and app people need nowadays. With all of those possibilities, and the current social media platforms, how could people not be addicted to cell phones? It is scientifically proven that the more time we spend on something, the more likely we are to get addicted. With this information, it is clear that people can in fact get addicted to cell phones if they spend too much time on it. And why wouldn’t they spend time on their cell phones? Nowadays, there's almost everything we could want on cell phones. Online books, online games, online shopping…why would we do things the old-fashioned way when we can do it all on a screen? With the modern technology that we have these days, it would be easy to get addicted. Not only can cell phones be addictive, they can be vital in some people’s lives, and it would get as bad as when some people will have meltdowns without their screen devices. Being addicted is not always easy to recognize, but let’s just think of what cell phones were meant to do, the more addictive they would be, the better for the stores!

If we think about it, anything can be addictive. It really just depends on the person and how reliant they are on their cell phones. People who are closer to their cell phones are more likely to be addicted, and although cell phones can easily be confiscated, most of the time, it’s full-grown adults or teenagers with casual parents who get addicted. Some parents aren’t responsible enough to watch over how much their kids are using their phones, so these kids will be addicted because they did not receive a warning to stop watching their cell phones. When being asked the general question about whether cell phones can be addictive, the question is more based off of whether cell phones can be ADDICTIVE. This question could also be; “Is it really possible for people to get addicted to their cell phones?” In reality, almost everything can be possible, and based on the society we have created, many people are likely to be addicted to their cell phones. We were introduced to this modern technology, and now, people all around the world are using cell phones more than they need to, which ends in some people getting addicted.

In conclusions, yes, cell phones can absolutely be addictive. Like I have said in my essay, these cell phones were designed to be addictive so that people would spend more money on these screen devices. Were cell phones ever what they claimed to be? Just a communication device? Just for educational purposes? I don’t think so. Application developers made these apps to be addicting so that they could earn money out of it. They are people too, and one thing about our population is that we are very greedy. We would put money over the wellbeing of others. If someone has an addictive app on their phone, this will make the phone addictive along with it. We should always watch out for this because it could be bad for our health. Using our phones regularly is not a problem, but we should always watch out for whether we are spending too much time on our phones. This can impact us very negatively, and the more dependent we are on social media, the more likely we are to believe online news. Now imagine what will happen if people were hated on online. This could end in self harm, and even suicidal attempts. It is okay to spend time on our phones, but we must always remember that there is a world and communities that we must interact with as humans.
