Book Review of Where the Red Fern Grows

Characters: Billy, his father, his mother, his three sisters, his grandfather, Dan, Ann, the hunters, Rubin, and Rainie.

Setting: Ozark

Plot: Billy really wanted hounds, so he saved money to buy two. They became very close.

The story “Where the Red Fern Grows,” written by Wilson Rawls, talks about a boy named Billy who really wants dogs, and he works hard for them. Finally, he gets two fine hounds. Billy really wants a hound, not just a hound, but two hounds. His family doesn’t have the money to pay for dogs, so Billy has no choice. But one day, he saw the newspaper saying that there were hound pups to be sold, so, for two years, he started to store money. When he stored enough, his grandpa helped him buy the puppies, but Billy was too impatient. So he sneaked out of his house and started to get after his dogs, it was hard, but he finally got them back. He trained his dogs to hunt, and they became fine hunters, the best in the country. In many hunts, the dogs almost died if it wasn’t for their littermate. Billy won the champion of coons hunts, too.  But his dogs died protecting Billy from a mountain lion.

Having faith is very important, especially when it comes to hard times. When one is having a hard time, like a deadly drought or a flood, one might give up. When one gives up, it might pay for it; sometimes, like in this weather change, life might be driven out of it. But instead, one can have faith and do everything one can to save oneself. Having faith is an essential thing in life, in every breath one takes. In the story, Billy does everything he can to get his dogs, and he succeeds. Billy has faith; he believes that he can get his dogs, and he is determined to achieve it. Even though it took him two years to reach his goal, he never gave in, and he was rewarded with what he always wanted: his dog. Faith is an important weapon against hardship.

The belief in God is very important because it leads to solutions in hard times. Believing in God will help one stay on the kind path, and it leads to a better future. When one believes in God, then He will believe in that person, too. In hopeless times, believing in God is very essential because He can lead one to a good solution. God can also help in many other ways. Listening to the Bible is a good way to respect God, too; it is God’s suggestion. In the story, Billy wants his dogs, so he sends a prayer to God. When he was hunting, one of his dogs (Ann) fell into the frozen river. Billy sends a prayer for help to God, and God shows him how to help his dog out. God saw Billy’s determination and belief in Him, so He helped him achieve his goal; He also helped him find names for the two young puppies. Billy always believes in God, so He has faith in him, too. Believing in God can help one achieve and succeed in almost anything.

A very strong bond between a person and an animal can make one’s love and loyalty to that person or animal strong. Love means one cares about that animal or person very much. And loyalty means one will protect each other with their lives. In the story, Billy will risk his life for his dogs, and so will his dogs. In a fight against a mountain lion, Dan died. Billy loves his dogs so much that he worked for two years to get them. He loves his dogs so much that he will do anything for them. His dogs are the same; they will protect Billy with their lives. That’s how Dan died; he died saving Billy. Love and loyalty are formed by years of trust and bonding.

A bond can farm a very love and loyalty.
