The story “Where the Red Fern Grows” was written by Willson Rawls. It talked about a boy who one day found some dogs fighting another hound dog that had a part without skin so the boy brought the hound dog into his house and helped the dog. After some time, the boy really wanted a hound dog after the incident, and he got a hound dog. The boy’s grandfather helped the boy and his hound dog to catch the boy’s first coon. The boy became really fond of catching coons after that, and he hunted almost all day and sometimes even at night. The boy’s mother didn't approve of this “hunting,” so she was a little worried every time the boy hunted a coon. The boy’s grandfather boasted to the world about how good his grandson was, so after some time, two kids came to the boy to have a bet to hunt a coon, but in the bet, one of the kids used an axe while running and got himself killed. After that, the boy was a little unsure, but after his dog proved to be so good at catching coons, he entered the coon hunting contest and was not that worried anymore. The boy won the contest, if it hadn't been for the dogs staying in the blizzard almost until the end of the contest.

This was a great story that not only had some awesome information but also taught us some great lessons. First, when you wanted something, you had to work for it. There were many things that could attract one’s attention if they wanted it, they had to afford it themselves. Nothing was free, we needed some things to survive, which were necessary, but out there, there were still things that we didn’t need. What we wanted was fine if we didn’t have it. If we really wanted it, we had to spend our own money for it, and if we didn’t have money, we had to earn it by working for others for money, such as raking leaves. In the story, the boy didn't have enough money to get a hound dog, so he had to save up to buy the dog. It actually took two years to save up enough money to buy the two hound dogs that helped the boy become famous. Sometimes things got pricey, but if one wanted it, they had to earn it by working in order to pay for it.

When one has a hobby, they should turn it into a passion. There were many hobbies that one could have, but it was great if it turned into a passion. A passion was like a hobby, but you were dedicated to it, and you would pursue your passion whenever you could. In the story, the boy really liked to hunt coons with his hound dogs, so he turned it into a hobby. Then it became a passion, and the boy even hunted for coons at night. That was also why the boy entered the coon hunting contest that only professionals could enter. The boy was a professional at hunting coons because he hunted them from day to night. If you had a hobby, such as hunting, like the boy in the story, you could turn it into a passion. It could become the most important thing in your life.

One couldn’t give up on their passion or hobby just because some other people said it was funny or useless. “Passion is like a wild horse that can take us on incredibly great adventures. It makes us think beyond the limits, gives us the courage to try new things, and fills us with a feeling of joy that can keep us going in doing what we love even in tough times.” In the story, the boy had a passion, but his mother was not happy about it, so she tried to make the boy stop hunting, but the boy continued strong, unbothered by his mother. There were many ways of pursuing passions and hobbies  you never knew when a passion might help you. Others were not the boss, they couldn’t control what we did. If we had a passion, no matter how funny or useless it might seem, it was still important, and you never knew when that passion might come in handy.

This was a great story that talked about a boy who had two hound dogs. The boy entered a coon hunting contest and won the trophy. A great story not only had valuable information but also contained good lessons that we could learn. First of all, when you wanted something, you had to work for it. There were many things that could attract one’s attention  if they wanted it, they had to afford it themselves. Second, a passion was like a hobby, but you were dedicated to it, and you pursued your passion whenever you could. Last but not least, others were not the boss  they couldn’t control what we did. If we had a passion, no matter how funny or useless it might seem, it was still important, and you never knew when that passion might come in handy. This was a great novel with lots of hidden lessons that we could learn from.
